JD 54' DECK FOR LA 175 - CONTINUED

My local JD dealer initially quoted me a price of a new deck complete with all parts around $ 1300.00 and also refused weld up the deck. When I called back to place an order, the price changed to over $ 2000.00. The explanation was that he would have to order a blank deck, then the parts and install. He stated it would be best for me to go buy a mower from Lowe's. I shopped with the previous owners for over 25 years, and actually purchased the LA 175 there. Now I am a disappointed customer????? Thought it best to just walk away. Ordered the deck, totally complete, from another dealer but the same company just an hour away. It's in the box, totally complete, to be picked up this Saturday. Total price: $1250.00. I HOPE i HAVEN'T MADE A MISTAKE AS 1200 BUCKS IS A LOT FOR THIS OLD GUY. Comments please.

Sounds like you did the right thing. They either want your business or they don't.

Was the old deck beat up or rusted out? How many hours to wear out your old deck?

The 800 hour x500 we bought seemed to have a really decent deck and aged well other than the anti scalp wheels

The deck wasn't beat up, but idler pulley base pulled out and entire area was very thin and several other areas rusted out after 800 hrs . Deck should have been cleaned more often. Possibly the deck could have been repaired, but I decided to get a new one and not worry about it. Spindles always greased and blades sharpened, engine oil changed. However, the more I read, the more I learn these stamped decks really don't last long.
I didn't want to make a fuss with the first JD dealer because my son just purchased a $ 25,000.00 tractor from them and I didn't want to possibly jeopardize any work he may require in the future.

Well, my son helped me pick up the new deck, totally complete. The folks at this dealership were extremely courteous and polite. A rewarding experience in comparison to my local dealer. As soon as I get out of the ankle boot, I will go over things thoroughly and then the new deck goes on.

That's a lot cheaper than a new lawn tractor; I don't understand the attitude of your local dealer at all.
