JD 5303 starting

This is my first tractor with a turbo and when starting up it cranks quickly but seems it is loaded up with to much fuel
. With some amount of dark smoke and the rpm will build up quickly and clean up. Question is this normal or do I have a problem. Tractor has 7 hrs.

nah your tractor is fine. i have a 5203 with the turbo and mine does the exact same thing as what youre describing. it didnt do it as much in the warmer weather, just something about the cold that makes mine smoke a little bit more.

Did they change them? My 5203 does not have a turbo. But starts the same way in the cold..... I make sure not to give it any throttle when starting.

yeah they added them in 07 to meet emmisions I think. mines an 08 with MFWD and syncshuttle. all the 5003 series are turboed now(well in 07-08 anyways since they are changing the model numbers this year). i love hearing the turbo when i throttle up or down! it's now reccomended that you give it 1/3 throttle, then start it(due to the turbo i guess). when shutting her down, they want you to bring down the throttle to idle for a min. or so before shutting off.
