Bigfoot62,

About the noise level, 10 db increase is twice as loud. So the difference between 71db and 80db is substancial.

Steve,
I'm not an acoustic engineer, so I can't argue that point. All I know is that while I'm working my 5085M, under a load, it's quiet enough inside that I can talk on my cell phone and nobody knows that I'm in a tractor, unless I tell them. :D I've never really noticed the numbers, but I'd bet that the 5M cab is quieter than a bunch of the economy cars that are on the road today.

Well I pulled the trigger on a 2010 5105M with a 563-SL loader about six weeks ago. Still waiting on the loader to come in. I was able to get a very good price from my local dealer. They have been great to work with, just trying to be patient while waiting on that loader. I, like you BigFoot62, liked the smaller size of the 5-series. I was also able to select the accessories I wanted as well as getting a new tractor vs. a used. I opted for the 32/16 transmission, front and rear fender extensions, extra set of wheel weights, left and right mirrors, extra lighting, buddy seat, 2-pt. bale spear for the loader, hood guard and brush guard, and horizontal exhaust. The accessories are in, being installed on Monday.

If we still don't have an estimated ship date for the loader, so I'm going to pick it up and do some mowing next week. I'll bring it back when the loader comes in for installation. The 0% was very attractive as well. I'm also a member of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and they have a partnership in place with John Deere which added up to a $400 coupon off a 5M Series tractor.

Good for you. I really think you will enjoy that tractor. I don't think you will be dissappointed.
My dealer had my 5085M and 563 loader in stock. So, I told them that I would take it on a Friday and they had it ready for delivery the following Wednesday. The only thing that I'm still waiting on are the outside mirrors and the clevis hitch. I can install them myself.
I was looking over you list of options and I'm just curious. Why did you choose the 32/16 trans and a horizontal exhaust? Also, did you get the 540/540E pto and the electric 3-pt hitch control?

Have fun with your new "toy."

I wanted the 32/16, mainly for the option to speed up/slow down when mowing/baling hay. The hi/lo provides a 20% increase/decrease in speed with a push of a button. It was also what the tractor on the lot had.

That's also the main reason for the horizontal exhaust, that's what it had. After seeing it, I like it. It has the 540/540E option as well as the electro-hydraulic 3-pt hitch. The 540E will be handy come spring time when I'm spreading fertilizer.

I'd like to see a picture of your 5085M with loader if you've got one.

I would be tempted to wrap that exhaust pipe with some of the special heat tape that the high performance guys use. It would keep a bunch of heat out of the surrounding area.

Well I now see it is an old post. I have a 5105M and neighbor has a 6420, which is same family as 6330. Which did you pick?

5105M and 6330 has same basic engine block, different turbo set up. 5105M a smaller frame and has geared transmission. Advantages of 6330 added weight, and the power quad fully syn transmission. 6330 is quiter and a little more sure footed. For field work I would go with 6330. For alot of field work really need a 7 seriers at least. 6 cyn has more tourque on up hills and heavy hay.
JD 5105M vs. JD 6330

Iエve been a member of this forum for a while now reading and researching John Deere tractors in the 75-100 hp range. A little background first. My father and I have 45 head of cattle and bale around 350 round bales of hay per year in east central Kansas. We have our JD 535 baler paired with a 1992-75hp JD 2755. Currently we cut the hay with a JD 260 disk mower paired with a 1975-84hp Ford 7000. This tractor has been rock solid through the years but we've decided to update this fall.

We have narrowed our decision to either a new 5105M or a slightly used (<500 hours) 6330. The 5105M is 90hp at the PTO and the 6330 is 85hp. Both tractors are priced in the upper $50エs.

I visited the four-state farm show a couple weeks ago in Pittsburg, KS and was able to see a 5095M next to a 6330. Both tractors would be fitted with SL-loaders, MFWD, and cabs. Both have the power reverser and several options for transmissions. We have no intentions of working ground; these will be used strictly for baling hay and feeding hay during the winter.

In talking to the Deere dealers, they're trying to persuade me into a 6-series in the possibility that we expand our operation in the future. I'm leaning towards the 5-series because it will satisfy the needs I have. We not looking to expand, as we both have full-time jobs besides our small ranching operation. I've heard it said that the 5M Series is basically a 6-series tractor in a 5-series body. I like the idea of a smaller size with the same amount of power.

I'm looking for suggestions. Which of the two tractors listed above would you choose and why? Thanks for your time.

The 5M is hard to beat. Plenty of power to bale hay and do things around a cattle operation. I really think the added size of the 6 series is cool, but the 5 series seems to be enough for cattle operations.

I kept trying to talk myself into a 6. I almost bought a 6415 instead of my 5525 and one of the reason I went with the 5525 is that it is easier to haul. Not as wide, fit my current trailer, etc. That might seems somewhat stupid, it was a consideration.

We currently run a 4520 cab and a 5525 cab on our operation.

I wish the radiator was easier to clean. The 5M and 6 addressed that.

Power - not a problem.

I think you would be fine either way.

Also, I would pass on the SL. I have a 542 SL on my 5525 and well - I don't like it. Run the loader a little while - you will do your own SL without a problem.

The load dampener is handy for hauling hay bales across bumpy pastures. Loader Accumulator I believe is the official name.

I don't think it's stupid to consider hauling when buying a tractor. I did buy a 6415 and man it's BIG compared to my 2030. It was just a better buy than any of the 5x25 or M series at the time.

Luckily I don't have much need to haul the 6415
