Buying Advice JD 5045D buying

   / JD 5045D buying #11
I say let your budget and needs dictate what to get. Just comparing the price difference the MFWD cost around 1/4 more than the 2wd. It had been around 15 years since I'd operated a 2wd tractor, then recently I ran across a deal on a nice old 2040. Now I don't have a loader, but honestly I haven't missed the 4wd on it. With the new 6' box blade on it I have moved a whole lot of dirt in a few hours, including smoothing over the holes where my dirt contractor stuck his D6 dozer 4 times! Don't get me wrong, I love having all wheels pulling but if money is an issue I would take the heavier 2wd with more hp over a lighter 4wd for the same price. If money is no object definitely get the 4wd, but if your land isn't terribly hilly the 5045d may do just fine for you. Good heavy 2wd tractors are very under rated IMO.

If buying a 2wd tractor this size and money was an issue I would consider a nice used 2040 too.
I didn't read where there was alot of need for this large of a tractor either. If the OP is considering a fel then a compact with hydro could be a better choice imo. I would give the 4320 some consideration too.
