Oil & Fuel jd 4400 4wd 159 hrs

Just had to replace front end differntial ring gear and pinion, shop replaced fluid with gear oil. Is this the correct fluid to be used in the in the front differntial?

Front end axle use low viscosity gear oil

How does a Ring and Pinion go bad after only 159 hours?

Front drive shaft seal went out, leaked out all the transmission fluid.
