I have a 2003 John Deere 4210. It has an electronic switch to turn on the 4x4. The switch works, indicator light goes on and off, but the 4 wheel drive stays engaged. Where do I start looking? Anybody have this before?

If I remember correctly, engaged is the default position, power turns off 4WD

Sometimes that (backing up) works. You can also lift the front wheels off the ground with the loader, which takes all the "wind up" out. But neither will help if it's the mechanism that's the problem.

Check wiring to the solenoid for mfwd and the solenoid.

Thanks for the info but it has been stuck on for over a month and hasn't popped out. Running it around my property isn't a big deal but I have to drive the paved roads sometimes, not a good plan in 4x4. Zebrafive, where would I find that solenoid?

I looked in JD parts and could not find it. You may have to trace the wires from the switch, or hoses from the cylinder that engages MFWD back to a control valve.

The tractor defaults back to 4wd when the 4wd solenoid doesn't work. It's letter "M" on the schematic. I believe all the solenoids in that stack have the same part # so you might be able to swap them out to rule out it is definitely the solenoid.

There's a hydraulic lever under the tractor, between the left front and rear wheel. Most likely it is jammed. It need to be fully extended to disengage the 4wd, or fully retracted to engage it. Try tapping it with a hammer.
