UPDATE: Coil was definitely going bad. I didn't help by leaving key switched to "RUN" for hours :foreheadslap:
Coil primary winding failed resistance test. I don't remember the OHMS, but primary was out of range. Secondary was in range.
Coil was getting HOT when key was on "RUN".
replaced coil, plugs, plug wires. Starts great. Solenoid won't engage the starter gear when hot. We at least have that figured out now though. If anyone has specific advice on hot solenoid issues, I'm listening.

I have to give it a couple of hours to cool if I shut it down hot. Working around that in the meantime.

Maybe the coil is going on that solenoid, the same way it went on the ignition coil primary????

Is the starter the type were the solenoid forces the starter gear out, or is the solenoid a remote one where it just enables the starter motor?
