JD 4100 voltage regulator/rectifier is smoking

Ok...new symptoms: when I start it it starts fine and then seems to stall after 5 seconds running but it doesn't stall completely. It is similar to the "stall" that happens if you lean too far forward in your seat and you trip the deadman switch. Today it did the same thing except this time it completely stalled twice. It started back up right away but it DID stall.

I know this could be related to anything but given the recent charging system issue and potential glow plug relay issue, does this symptom sound like it could be related to those things?
