JD 400 oil

Hello,

I recently bought a 1969 JD 400 with a Diesel engine.

The engine oil is black as night. What oil should I use for an oil change?

The book says JD torq-gard. Above 32 F to use SAE 30. -10 to 32 F to use 10W20.

This isn't my first rodeo and I know oils have changed a bit in the last 45 yrs, so what would be the best oil to use?



While on the subject of oil, what should I use for hydraulic/transmission oil?

First 400's were built in '75. What is your serial number?

I'd go with the diesel engine oils from Deere, as well as the hydraulic fluids used today.

According to Tractordata.com JD ind 400's were built '65-'71. I'd recommend JD Torq-Gard +50, Shell Rotella T or Delo 400 15W-40 engine oil

I was only finding the garden tractor JD 400. Didn't search for industrial...

400 lawn & garden tractor only came from factory with a gasoline engine.

Your tractor is old enough it used John Deere 303 Hydraulic fluid. Thant has been replaced by John Deere HyGard.

Local stores carry the Shell Rotella and I think I'll go with that.
Also the JD hyGard for the trans.

Generally don't use diesel motor oil rated for 2007/2014 and later particulate filter equipped emissions diesels . In an earlier diesel with a flat tappet cam, but.........
The oil should have an API rating of CH-4 or CI-4. There are some but not all CJ-4 oils that also are rated backwards for CH-4 or CI-4 applications.
I don't know why most people look at viscosity and ignore what is really important . The API symbol .

If it was mine, I'd use either Mobil 1 5w40 or T6 5w40, diesel rated. If I was near a VW dealership, I'd buy some Castrol 5w30 rated for TDIs.

I'm in the same boat and changing mine for the first time. I just picked up the Rotella this morning. Glad to hear it is one of the recommended ones.
