I have a JD 316 with an Onan P218G engine that isn't charging the battery. I have 30 volts AC on the stator wires but onl 1-2 volts DC at the regulator with the wire off. This is a new regulator I just installed any ideas

Welcome to TBN! I moved your thread into the John Deere Owning/Operating section so more users will see it and give you some feedback!

maybe the regulator is sensing no load and reducing the voltage. try with the wires hooked up just make sure the positives and negatives are in the right places. Atleast you didn't make the same mistake I did.

I once changed a stator on a 316 thinking it was bad but turns out the regulator was bad. I was checking the voltage from the stator with my multimeter in DC instead of AC.
