Will someone with practical experience with the JD 3120 vertical exhaust please identify the pros and cons to installing this kit. I really like the way it looks, but haven't quite justified beyond that. Thanks for your help.

I put the vertical exhaust kit on my 3520. The big advantage for me was a clean loader arm. It always drove me nuts to have to clean that black exhaust off the arm. Now it stays clean and I don't get black all over my shirts and pants when greasing it.

It is very easy to install. The under side of the hood will be marked for the hole saw and the edges of the hole are covered by a rubber gasket. The exhaust drops down on the pipe under the hood. Four positions, front, left, right, and rear which you would not want. Gases would be blowing in your face.

I would do it again, no queation.

GreenMtns, Thanks a lot for the input. I can relate to the black soot on the LDR arm. I ordered the vertical exhaust and can't wait to install it. Have a great day!

Love mine, although it did get stuck on once.

I purchased my JD in April of 07, put over 100 hours on it the first year, and just last week discovered this community. The feedback and communication has been exciting and very helpful. Thanks for the feedback & pictures of the vertical exhaust. I can't wait to install the parts I have on order.

Deererunr, it only takes about 1/2 hour to do the vertical exhaust install with the proper tools. It will take you longer to get the tools together than to do the actual install. Its pretty easy. The hood drills really easy with a hole saw. If you want to send me your emial I can send you pics of my install. It may help you. dirtworksequip@aol.com

Dirt, That is one handsome tractor. The only thing you need is a foot of snow and minus 40 windchill to really appreciate that cab.

Terry,

Thanks Terry, it actually looks a little different since I installed the right and left outside mirrors.I've enjoyed the cab from day one. I like it no matter what the weather is. The weather doesn't have to be severe to appreciate being isolated from the outside............. You can keep the snow!

Sincerely, Dirt

Dirt, The snow and cold keeps the killer bees and fire ants in Texas. It doesn't seem to deter the misquitos though.

As global warming (climate change) continues I suppose both will be in Minnesota within the next 10 years. Oh well, At least I'l be safe in my cab.

I would like to install the kit on my 990 as the parts book shows basically the same kit but would like to know what keeps the stack from moving around as you can not get to any bolts? Also what size hole saw do you need? I have the same problem as to eating fumes and making the loader arms and weight black. Thanks Eric

If you look under the hood of your tractor you will see the molded indexes for the hole. It will give the size or you can measure it. If I remember correctly, the instructions will also tell you what size hole to drill. The edges of the hole will be covered by a rubber ring that comes in the kit.

You will remove the exhaust from where it bolts onto the header and bolt the new tubing back on. The top of the new tubing is cone shaped. The exhaust stack will drop down over the cone after the hood is closed and be located by a ridge on the cone. The stack just sits there. It is not bolted down. It does not need to be. Mine has been on for over 170 hours and has never come off by itself. As dirtworksequip has said however, you need to remove it a few times a year or it will jam and start to rust itself down and become very hard to remove. So far I have not had that trouble.

You will have a choice of 4 directions point the top bend of the stack to. I think most of us point it off to the left but it is up to you.

Very easy to put on. You need to be aware that most of the hoods are used on more than one model and will be marked in more than one place or have different size markings under the hood. Just be SURE you are drilling in the right place with the right size hole saw. Once you cut the hole it is forever.

Do these kits leave the factory muffler, or is there a muffler in the stack? Chrome strait pipe would look so sweet!!

They leave the factory muffler on the engine. You would have to keep the cone at the bottom of the stack if you went to chrome. That would, of course, require pictures.

I would have thought the 990 vertical stack comes out the side like my 790. On mine, it comes out of an opening in the engine side cover then turns up. No holes in the hood that way. Where does your existing 990 exhaust route?

I think you may be right about the routing of the exhaust. I checked the catalog and it looks like it may come out of the side.

According to the parts manual on the 990 there is a serial # break @590001. It looks like the older units have the stack come out the side panel and the newer units like mine come through the hood. There was also a muffler change with the advent of the 4tnv84 engines as far as I can read. Hope somebody could clarify.

Interesting. Does the new engine coincide with the serial number break as well? Come to think of it, the 3005 (new 790) has an underslung exhaust. Perhaps the newer engines have a different manifold layout?

OK guys I looked under my 990 hood and there are no indexes marked for the hole. Anyone out there with a 2004-up 990 do this and did the kit come with some sort of template? Last night I went out to scrape the ice off the driveway and the wind was just so that all I could smell was the fumes. I guess that does not bother me as much as thinking about mowing this year for 2-3 hours @ 2700 rpm and smelling fumes when I should be enjoying the smell of fresh air and cut grass.

Hey ejb, the vertical exhaust is no cure-all. I still get my share of diesel smell on my 790 with vertical. On top of that, the stack seems to end right at ear height. If I don't wear my radio-headphones I get ringing in the ears after a couple hour mowing session.

Of course, I wouldn't trade it for anything!
