I have a 1987 mower that I needed to repair the deck lift mechanism. The project was easy to fix, but the one part that apparently was not hooked up properly and I can't figure out, is the thin 4" spring that goes on the height adjustment. When I removed the fender unit, I found the spring connected to a hole in located under the depth height plate, but it was dangling and not connected on the other end. I have the shop manual and have looked at the JD parts website, but cannot figure out where this spring connects to. If anyone knows where this spring goes, I'd love to hear from you.:confused2:

I went to the local dealership and talked to a mechanic. The spring is basically a guide for the height adjustment lever. It attaches to the underside of the height adjustment plate on one end, and inserts into a hole next to the screw that holds the plate in place. Too simple! I was thinking it had something to do with providing tension but all it does is guides the adjustment rod. You'd think the technical manual would indicate that...

Glad you got it fixed. Does seem simple, but now you know. Writers prolly missed it because it was so simple but we don't know that with just a handful of parts sometimes.
