You would have thought this would be a no-brainer for a company that makes farm equipment to support the corn growers that buy their equipment.

Alcohol from corn will always be energy negative as a fuel and no amount of technology will ever make up for thermodynamic inefficiency. It's not energy dense and IMO there could only be a emissions angle to make it sound worth Deere exploring.

So hopefully they can save $$ on DPFs & DEF tanks and I wouldn't expect a lower price on farm tractors, but the system may be polished up in time to meet Tier VIII. I expect common rail injectors will be the easy part, typically not leak/drip, or require close tolerances. Minimal visible flames if a high pressure line breaks? Check. Keeping water out of fuel, easy enough. Economical Sched 200 SS lines might get pricey to replace but nothin' Deere can't work with.

btw, who needs CRP lands when corn subidies pay better anyway? Will we make good use of our territory or just let the animals take it back from us? o_O

Other than energy concerns the main drawback to introducing ethanol in fuels was it's effect on metals. Adequate research and modifications were not done prior to it's introduction. Add to that the small engine industry was slow to get on board and a large segment still has not.

Protective coatings, resistant fuel components, and fuel injection is required.

As far as getting it to burn in a compression ignition engine it probably just needs lower compression, a lubricant added, along with a change in injection timing.

Using materials that resist the corrosive effect will be the challenge.
