Hello all,
I was hoping that I could get some medical advice from the forum members. It would appear that I may be in the early onset stage of "attachmentitis" and was just seeking some coping advice.
For the last few years here on our little place we have bumbled along with an ancient/underpowered (but still loved) Massey and a monsterous but mechanically frustrating Zetor. Both have been relatively hydrauliclly inept so mainly used for pulling tasks, trees, trailers and the like. Sometimes they would work for a while and we would get some flail mulching done. All of which has been frustrating as you find yourself looking at tasks and thinking I could do that if I had hydraulics and a ....... (insert preferred attachment)

Finally it has gotten the better of me and we have lashed out on a new tractor. Ordered a Mahindra 5035 a few weeks ago. Sorry to the passionate devotees of the other brands/colours. Am reasonably confident whatever your allegiance we all love a new one rolling off the delivery truck. This now means though we have hydraulic power and a loader, cue cheers from family members sick of son/dad's grumbling.

This brings me to the crux of the potential dilemma. Now that I have capacity to use attachments have I opened up an unfulfillable aspect of my life. I started out with, I just want to do a few jobs around the farm. Now after time amongst the forums I think ooohhh a grapple would be awesome, look a homemade counterweight WITH tool holders WOW, what about some hooks on my new bucket and a, and a, and a....

I can see the crippling potential of this syndrome as I am forced to give up unimportant social events with my lovelies friends, in an attempt to find more attachments and put them to use. How do you all cope? I can see from some forum members signatures that they are also heavily afflicted with this desire.

At this stage I can really only see one potential cure,

Bigger Shed!!!

To give you an idea how badly I might be afflicted I have attached a picture of the trailer after returning from a trip up the road. Driving past the secondhand machinery yard saw me drop in for a visit. One Massey Ferguson Ripper, a set of hay forks and a frame for a future counterweight later I make it home. That's not to bad I hear some of you say. The Tractor is NOT even here yet !! I fear this is a bad omen.

Any recommended coping strategies will be appreciated.

Thanks, BR

now how do I get to Craigs List from this page?

A bigger shed only masks the symptoms of attachmentitis. Do not despair for there IS a cure. The cure is to own one of each!

You're doomed, Mate. Make your peace with your family and your bank then accept your fate.

We, here at TBN, will help you spend your money, er... I mean advise wherever we can.

Congratulations on the new tractor. I hope you ordered it with maximum remote hydraulic outlets (they'll come in handy later). It almost seems like you think there is something wrong with wanting a few extra attachments for your tractor. This is totally wrong-headed. You (and your tractor) deserve this stuff and certainly need it to be an efficient and effective land manager and optimize the benefits of owning that nice, new tractor. The bigger shed comment I have to agree with 100%, though.

Bigger shed is only big enough if you stop finding new attachments and equipment. It has to be a full sized barn on a massive scale just to be able to sleep at night and not worry about where you are going to put everything you have and will have in the next couple decades!!!

As the saying goes;"a tractor is only a slow ride to the mailbox without attachments".
I was surprised the other day and just realized how many we had;but with two tractors they seem to accumulate.
My son also has the bug;he just drug home an 1900's horse drawn planter and a badly decomposed disc.

:cool2:When you come down with Tractor Fever there is no cure the only thing that helps is to get a new piece of equipment sometimes it goes in remission for a while after buying another tractor its not fatal unless your wife doesn't catch the fever.hope you can get a implement soon as this will make you feel better.

"The Barn, The Barn !!!!" Like a scene from the Blues Brothers, illuminated light, back flips, celebratory high fives to unsuspecting children. Honey that money put aside for decorating a a room for when your sister visits.....

I knew I was asking the right people for coping strategies.

Thanks,

You know you have a problem when you buy commercial steel shelving like they use at Home Depot and use a electric fork lift to shelve your implements three high to the ceiling on wooden pallets. I confess.....I do but it sure saves a lot of floor space.

NY birdman, if I take the tractor up the drive to get mail can I use a mail carrier attachment? Some sort of weatherproof gasketed super box with a letter opener sheath and built in LED light. Maybe a diesel powered, naked flame projection port for Bills ( the paying sort, apologies to forum members called Bill)

Ohhh so many options, if only my fabrication skills matched my aspirations.

Thanks to all who have offered me some coping advice. One of my coworkers has suggested painting some of the attachments camoflage so their real number might never be known by interested parties. Or just overwhelm with sheer visual numbers, a strategy adopted by his wife's shoe cupboard.

Right, back to marveling at my fellow forum members creativity and skills.

Cheers,
BR

I've had my tractor 32 years and never needed anything more than a box blade and a brush hog.......oh, and an FEL which I built from scratch 4 years ago.....and a post hole digger- oh, and then a back hoe- oops forgot about the tiller, pallet forks, and the brush carrier.

It really is just another classic case of geting diminishing returns. Sometimes all those attachments can just be a pain, to dig out and put on, especially for a ten minute job!

It's like the guy on his forth (bigger) boat. In the end, he probably never had the fun he had as a kid with an inner tube!

I used to run around the yard as a toddler pulling a garden rake!

BR Congrats on your new Tractor. While not my first choice I am sure it wiil do you well. (see my sig as I am biased)

You need to enroll in a 12 step program. This is critical as it will save your life. Repeat it will save your life.

Now carefully fallow instructions. Step one is to make a list of all your attachment wishes, in priority order with sound reasons for purchase. They need to be written down, with solid reasoning. Step two is talk to your BOSS Unit or financial adviser. Step three is as finances allow, BUY in order of need the next 10 attachments. Once complete you are cured........but by that time is will be your wish to upgrade the TRACTOR.

Hope this helps.

PS pallet forks should be first on the list.
PSS I hope you ordered with a universal QA system. - If not get this addition before it is delivered, also at least one set of rear remotes with FLOAT optionj

Actually some welding gear and a power band saw should be first on the list, after he gets the new shed built...
My first tractor had a FEL bucket. This one has the bucket but its a QD unit so I can switch between the bucket and four different homemade forks or the lifting boom...And that is just on the FRONT end..

Thanks Powerscol, appreciate the advice if not lifesaving it might be marriage saving which is possibly just as important. The ten most important attachments would be a rotating carousel of a list dependant upon what thread I was reading, but think the sentiment is sound. Having the minister of finances involved is a double edge as she is likely to make her own requests. This could make access even more challenging as I fight to get past dad and her for seat time.

Set of hay forks was in that load that came from the road trip. They need a bit of work but were originally pallet forks also. I have a few ideas for improvement so that will slow me for a while as I puzzle through them. The tractor comes with euro hitch so they should fit straight away which is a win, that and the price.

I hope that a cure is really not possible. It would mean that the inventivness might be drying up. That and I do like the fun of a farm clearance sale or auction. Especially if its an older attachment that already has a history that my family can continue.

One of the things I like most here on the forum is members building and modifying their own attachments. I find it very inspiring, am also jealous of their fabricating skills.

Cheers,
BR
