Tractor
yes
It has nothing to do with the capabilities of the tractor. It is the size of the tractor. It is bigger than the competition. Mahindra used to make a tractor, the 1816. It was sold as a compact tractor. Now that they sell the Max it no longer sold. The max is even more than the "comparable" Deere.

Any tractor with rear tires larger than 26 X 12 - 12 is not a SCUT. Any SCUT without position control on the three point hitch is not a tractor.

Is this your opinion, or from some international organization of tractor categorizing?

I have a b7300 that doesn't have position control, does this mean its not a real tractor?

P.s. I still can't figure out why anyone cares.....

No, not international, but domestic (USA). Nebraska Tractor Test Labs. If you or your tractor are not based in the USA then the guidelines may not apply. I'm pretty sure your Kabota would be outside of both the SCUT and tractor classifications. I would consider it an step in the evolution of home gardening tools, and we're all glad that they don't make em like they used too.

So JD did not make a tractor til the 60's?

There was a lot of food put on the table by JDs, FARMALLs, OLIVERs, and ALISS CHALMERSs tractors 60-70 years ago. If I understand this SCUT topic correctly, that is of little consequence.

A tractor with 26 X 12 - 12 rear tires (SCUT), and no position control on the three point hitch, would fall into a lesser category, like garden tractor or something like that. If the tractor has 27" or larger tires on the rear and still has no position control on the three point hitch, well then it just kind of falls in to the "not very easy to work with category".

Maybe its a Garden Tractor

The 3 pt hitch was designed and patented with DRAFT control only. Ferguson designed it and had it on his black demonstration tractor, and then used on the 9N. The 8N came out with a lever that when activated, gave it
position control.. The Nebraska Tractor Tests said it was a tractor. There are other tractors with 3 pt. with smaller
wheels with draft control only. I would not call them a garden tractor...

What other tractors you talking about?

My neighbor has a Max 28 and its definitely a nice, well built tractor. Some of the specs certainly overlap into the compact range. However, regardless of the size specs, it very much looks/feels like a subcompact -- almost the same vibe you'd get on a Kubota BX or Deere 1023/5/6. Many of the components are smaller/daintier, the rear tires are smaller, etc.

As for the 3-pt hitch classification, I can't see how that matters, regardless of what some arbitrary rating from Nebraska says. I've seen tractors of all sizes with and without position control, some were massive Ag tractors. Some of the big Ag tractors can still be spec'd with different types of 3-pt arrangements.

Take your feelings about large AG tractors, old production, and position control out of the equation. We're trying to find the razor's edge fine line between Garden Tractor, SCUT, and tractor.

I'd like to see that tractor with 25" or smaller tires with position control too! It's likely something built for the vineyards of the Italian countryside. If in fact that is the case, the term SCUT should only be used domestically, USA.

I've just trademarked a new name. I'm calling machines like the Max "Crossover SCUTs", or "CSCUT". I'll be in negotiations with the big brands to see who gets to use the term. I'm expecting 7 figures....

Hey '94. Could you compare the 2516 and MAX28 for us.

Actually, Mahindra is starting to use the term "Mid-CUT". Their Max line is closer in size and performance to the smaller Kubota B models than the BX's (and the same thing with several other brands). Maybe they figure some buyers won't notice that other brands offer comparable size models.

While some may argue the point about size classification I think it is good to have this in between size available. I personally don't need it but others might and at least it is an available alternative. If if fits your needs I wouldn't worry about which size it is.

The last line says it all. Who cares what someone calls it if its the machine for you.

Taken literally, wouldn't "Mid-CUT" imply that it's in the middle of the CUT category?
