I had no idea where to post this so here it is. It's one of those things I've undoubtedly seen hundreds of times but never looked at until recently.

I've seen a lot of posts here about the need or desire to have a greater 'throw' on a hydraulic cylinder than is possible (like 12" retracted and 32" extended). Well, here's a way to accomplish that kind of feat.

It appears to be a real simple solution. It's just two hydraulic cylinders pointing in opposite directions plumbed to open together and close together.

Here is one last picture taken in traffic. For all I know this is old news to everyone but me. Nonetheless, I thought it was a neat idea. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

interesting concept, raymond forklifts use single acting cylinders setup the same way, welded beside each other to get the lift range, but i havent seen double acting cylinders setup that way before, i will have to keep that in mind next time i am making somethin hydraulic, thanks gary

We use to have these twin axle tandem trucks for hauling silage and they had rams inside of rams. There was two sets on each bed. If you didn't raise them level one side would lock up and you really had a mess. I think that is why they now use single rams but still use one inside of the other for distance.

Funny you should mention that. I just pointed out that same setup on a cement truck to a co-worker about 4-6 weeks ago. They were pouring a sidewalk outside our window. Seems like a great idea. I was impressed. Co-worker thought I was looney tunes for getting so excited over construction equipment. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

what you are refering to is known as a telescoping cylinder, they are generaly only single acting, the setup garry is showing is neat cause it can be made double acting

I knew there was a name for them, I just couldn't spit it out. And yes they were only single acting. The other set up was double.

I took these pictures in traffic with my cell phone. Can you imagine what the mixer truck driver must've been thinking? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
