Incline mowing

I am trying to determine which, if any, zero turn can cope on very steep inclines. Does anyone have some experience with this subject??

Prior to any purchase a dealer lent me a Torro zt to try out on our hilly 3.5 acres, gave it back after five minutes due to side slip/traction loss. Ended up with a JD L120 that went well for seven years but still lots of situational care needed, now have a 4wd yanmar that is better still ...regards

I had the same decision to make. Opted for a four wheel steer John Deere. Had a Toro but the grade was just too much for it. Actually coming down the hill was harder on it than going up. Always felt unstable and had to lean into the hill to keep on all fours. The John Deere can run across the hill from side to side with no problem. Mows at 8.5 mph if I want to go that fast. I'm very happy with it.

had a toro zx480 and traded up to a New Holland Boomer 1030 with 4WD and a 5ft rear finishing mower. Never looked back. Sure the zero turn is faster around obstacles, but the bigger mower deck will compensate on the open. Where sliding was an issue, I don't have it anymore thanks to 4WD. I can mow wet or dry, and the tractor stays put as long as 4wd is engaged.

I have been mowing commercially for 14 years. My scag 61 inch zero turn is amazing on hills. Up and down and across hills. I have one lawn in particular that I am still amazed when done, that the scag holds as well as it does.
I also currently run a Toro 61 inch that I wouldn't even consider using on the same lawn.

DieselMonk, you are a whole different class. I agree with the 4WD statement. I tested a JD X728 (4 wheel steer, 2WD) on my lawn before purchasing the X729. The 729 is full time 4WD and 4 wheel steer. I like the stability that the tractor offers over the ZTR and I plan to add a FEL very soon.
