Re: 5 HP chipper?

What do you guys think of hooking up the chipper using a trailer hitch instead of the 3ph?
This would make the conversion easier.
Obviously we would have to make sure it was substantually aligned prior to engaging the PTO, which means it wouldn't be idiot proof.
This would make the conversion substantially cheaper.
Mine is on wheels already.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

My problem was I had an aerator that would not drop down low enough for the tines to sink into the ground fully. The solution I came up with was to drill more holes in the left and right lower links. First I had to remove both rear wheels and I then removed both lower links. I then drilled two extra holes horizontaly foward of the hole that is already there. first hole at 2 3/4 inches, second hole at 5 1/2 inches foward of orginal hole. I did this on both left and right lower links. When you install lifting links to these new holes it allows lower links to drop further down. If I did it over again would only drill extra holes at 5 1/2 inches, never use center hole. CAUTION WHEN USING NEW HOLES IN LOWER LINKS YOU MUST ADJUST HYDRAULIC CONTROL LEVER SO THAT LIFTING RODS DO NOT HIT SHIELD AROUND REAR PTO SHAFT WHEN RAISING LOWER LINKS. I had to replace a part on right lifting rod because it bent when it hit shield. Hope you understand what I did, if not I will try to explain it better if needed.

Sounds like a good solution.
Do you think you've weakened anything by doing this?
What dimension could you use to prevent the contact problem?

I do not think i weakened anything by drilling extra holes. I thingk my B7100 had extra holes in lower links already. As for lifting rods hitting pto shield I do not know what dimension would avoid this. I needed about 7 inches more down travel from lower links so aerator would dig into soil and i got this by drilling hole 5 1/2 inches foward from origional hole.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

Have you guys seen the Landpride aerators? They look VERY substantial based on weight. I would like one very much. I know some of these are not "core" aerators, meaning they poke holes but do no remove cores but rather compress. They are not as good (I have heard).

Re: 5 HP chipper?

The Landpride aerator is a "core" aerator. I got a quote from Carver for the 48" model (smallest model) for $1350. Not cheap, but looks like it's made better than most others I've seen.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

Woodstock, since you never did tell me how to convert that old 5hp chipper/shredder I've got, I just came in from putting a new carburetor, air filters, and spark plug in it./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Guess I'll just keep running that old Briggs & Stratton. It even started on the first pull of the rope./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Will wonders never cease?/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: 5 HP chipper?

Bird, mine starts the first pull. What you forgot to report was with that big flywheel on the 5 HP, the first pull also dislocates your shoulder, so it has to start the first pull.

I didn't forget about this project, but probably will leave this until winter.

I was thinking that it would be easier to use a trailer hich to attach to it instead of the 3 point.

Think this will work?

I don't know; can't see it would make much difference either way on that part.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

I have a BIO350 tractor chipper and mulcher which I run using a 43hp MF135. I had to rebuild it after a fire.
Basically it is cat 1 TPL. PTO shaft drives a gear box with a 2B wedge rope pulley on the shaft at 90 degrees to the PTO shaft. A pulley is fiited to the mulcher box and a wood chipper disc is fitted to the other end. I will try this unit with my recently acquired B7001. I don't expect it to be that good.
Whether it is worth converting a 5HP chipper to this configuration is the question? If you have access to a cheap gear box and pulleys then it may be worth while as these units are not cheap to buy.

If anyone wants more details I could photograph it.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

Please do.
Does any one know what rpm the 5 HP turns?
Would we need a gear box to increase the pto speed?

Re: 5 HP chipper?

Woodstock, I don't know just what rpm that little 5hp motor is turning, but you would most definitely need a gearbox to increase it from the 540 PTO speed if you wanted it to turn anything close to what the little motor was turning it.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

Rear PTO is 450 RPM
Mid PTO is 2500 RPM
5 HP B&S runs at RPM
Seems to me we're better off running off of the mid mount PTO.
I have a snow blower which includes a PTO shaft which brings it out to the front on the quick hitch.
So I need to make the chipper fit the quick hitch which just might work.
Would 2500 RPM be enough?

Re: 5 HP chipper?

I'd probably recommend a belt/pully setup to increase the drive rpm from the 540 pto speed. This would also provide
some driveline protection in the event of a jam.

Re: 5 HP chipper?

The way I figure it, with 2500 rpm and 20 hp, there isn't going to a jamb. It would be more like an explosion.
I wonder where than old racing clutch scatter shield is?

Re: 5 HP chipper?

more like an explosion

I think you may be right./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I don't think I'd want to stand too close to a chipper made for a 5hp B&S being powered by a 20hp tractor with no belt of other kind of slip or shock absorbing system./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

There's another thing I learned to be careful about with the chipper/shredder. One day I was running it at the edge of the garden with the chute held open (the chute on mine directs the discharge down and by opening it, it was directed straight out horizontally). That worked great for spreading the chips over a larger area. However, a bolt came loose internally. Sure was noisy when that thing sounded like it completely self-destructed. It threw the flails out the discharge chute. As it turned out, it was very simple to put back together, but I found parts scattered as far as 50' away. Needless to say, you don't want anything, or anyone, out in the direction of the discharge, even at a long distance away.

The pluggers that I worked with on the golf course they were Cushman the plugs would go in a bin that is in the center of the drum and there is a door that you open and empty the plugs from. When we empied the plugs from the greens we would put them on the tee's and use them to reseed the tee's with the same grass as the greens.
