What is the best implement (for a 30 h/p tractor) to prepare ground for planting. The ground is uneven with a bunch of weeds. I am trying to plant some rye grass, but the land has never been worked before. Looking at doing this for 8-10 total acres. I have a disc harrow, but it didn't seem to really get in the ground much. It only seemed to "bail" the weeds I had already brush hogged.

Moldboard plow, if never worked before. Still need to get the weed cover off to do a good job.
Or subsoiler to rip it up, and then a 'heavy' disc harrow to cut the sod and break up the clods of sod and dirt. Subsoiling this fall and letting it freeze (? if that happens for you) or winter over for discing and planting in the spring. Just what little I might know /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Get a plow & turn the sod over, then disc (but it won't smooth out the roughness) then run a cultivator and for a really good smooth finish a spike tooth harrow and spring tooth harrow with eveners.

I don't know what your ground is like (composition and hardness) and am not sure how uneven it is so it is hard to give an accurate answer but...a Pulverizer ( A&B Eagle Pulverizer ) is made to break up the ground and is very heavy duty. A box blade with Scarifiers will also work to break up the soil as long as it isn't too hard to begin with.

Good Luck.

Great. Actually, I just bought a pulverizer. Would I use this before the disc harrow?

I have a 5 foot disk and 35 hp tractor that I use for working food plots and planting. It takes allot of passes to break throught the grass and then the soil, but if you keep at it, it will do a great job in time. Just keep going over the same are again and again. There's no shortcut in this HP range.

Add some weight to the disc. Notched pans are best for cutting through trash. I usually disc a firebreak and burn, off thatch, cuttings, etc. but might not be an option in your area.
