Spade bit in an impact driver works really well for me. Not broke one yet.

That has been my experience as well. I put down my 1/2" right angle drill and started using the 1/4" impact with a spade bit to drill holes in studs.

Been lazy and chucked small quick connect twist bits in my cordless impact driver for drilling wood and no issues in fact I don't notice. But this is wood and not precision work. Don't think I would ever try it for metal.

I have never used an impact driver, but I thought the impact would be rotational like an impact wrench, not an impact on the point of the screw, like a hammer drill.

Am I wrong?

Ya know, good question... I was wondering the same when I first got my 20v Dewalt impact driver. But I understand it, the impact is a repetitive 'concussive' blow when the torque reaches a certain point on the bit.

I use short spade bits in my impact driver where it's a tight fit. But it's jerky and very loud. If I have the room, my drill is ten times better for drilling holes.

The one time I chucked a spade bit in my hammer drill, I didn't like it. Actually went back to my regular drill. As Eddie said... jerky as heck (felt wrong) and I didn't really see much advantage. Now driving screws is a whole 'nother story!!!

Now, that I have done, and plenty of it.. You ain't lived until you have driven big gnarly deck screws with your 1/4 inch impact drive... puts em in fast, like "right now". And less strain on the operator too.
