Hey guys,
I just acquired a 6' 3PH IH sickle bar mower. This unit has a belt drive attached to the PTO shaft and has a long pittman bar on it...which is obviously rotted out. wondering if any of you old IH guys might know a model number or a group of model numbers that this unit might fit into. I have look for a ID plate, but I can't find one. No serial #, no model #. It does have some IH casting numbers on several pieces, though. Anybody got a idea what model number, or better yet, have a setup manual for this mower? I can post some pics of it tomorrow, if that helps.

Thanks,

Pics are always nice to see. Also you might find a Case/IH dealer who could help you looking at the pics. Try doing a search on Google or some of the old tractor sites.

I used to have an old JD sickle mower with a shot pitman arm. What I did was gingerly take it off and use it as a template. Cut a new one out of rough oak. Used it for YEARS with no problems.

Best wishes,
Ron

If you post this question on Yesterday's Tractors- Attachments someone there will likely answer your question faster than here on TBN. The Ytmag bunch usually deals with this type of subject matter all the time.

IH models 10,16,21,24,28 use a pitman that is 35-11/16" long
Models 12,25,27,31 use a pitman that is 31-3/4" long

If there are no Case IH dealers in your area you might try a farm supply or any equipment dealer who also sells Tisco parts can get it.

We do have some new ones in inventory. The bolt pattern which you can take from the metal ends and the length are the critical parts.

This one mounts on my three point hitch. There are casting numbers on some of the parts, but I don't think that would help. There are three chains on this unit, also. 2 chains are on the right hand side (facing implement from back) and 1 chain is on the left hand side. The one on the left is connected to a arm that runs length wise through the mower housing and emerges on the other side, connecting to the swingarm (sorry, don't know the tech terms on these) close to the sickle blade. It appears this somehow keeps the sickle bar from sliding on the ground during transport. Acually, this is what I was working up to, to ask. Where does the chain on the left side hook up to on my tractor to lift the sickle off the ground when the 3ph is lifted up. Ok, do I have everyone confused now??

If this one is anything like my JD one, you locked your 3PH in one position, with the frame of the mower attached to it. One of the chains went to a rocker arm, so when you raised the arm, the sickle bar only raised--not the 3PH.

Think about it in those terms and see if it makes sense.

Best wishes,
Ron

Post a pic, we will have it figured out in a jiffy. I am almost sure that there is a break-away on it also. just in case the cutter bar hit an object hidden the grass. it will not break away from the tractor but it will allow the cutter bar to pivot rearward.then all that you did was back up to set it back in place. does the belt turn a big flywheel(sometimes call a balanced head)?

Ok, here is a pic of the unit. Another guy on the YT board thinks its a c-28, but looks like it may have been modified. He thinks it was originally a fast hitch type. Take a look and see what you think.

OK, last pic and question. In the picture is a "swingarm. On the left side, you will see a arm with a chain attached. In this current configuration, when I lift the 3PH up, the sickbar end drags on the ground, due to its pivoting on the left hand side. The arm with the cahin is supposed to be attached to something to lift it or hold it in place. Any ideas??

That cutter is the fore runner of the balanced head mower. I believe there is a slip clutch in that large drive pulley. also it looks like it was a 2 point quick hitch at one time but has been made over for 3ph.
