^^This.^^ Stew just doesn't taste right unless it's made on a woodstove in a cast iron pot. :licking: Set the pot way off to one side, and let it simmer all night.
I'll also use it to heat up canned goods, and to heat water to make tea.
Used to use it a lot more at my last house since the stove was in the kitchen. Current place it's in the living room, not as convenient, though we still use it.
It's also great for making toast...place the bread, bagel, etc right on the top. 30 seconds (if that) is all it takes, much better than a toaster!

We even cook 'taters IN the woodstove. Wait until the fire is past peak but still quite hot, wrap 'taters in tin foil and lay near door away from coals, flip them at 30min, done at 60min.

We cook Brats all the time, and tin foil dinners. (inside the stove:laughing:)

I have some heavy hinged steel boxes that were used for ship intercoms. I put in some foil wrapped potatoes and shoved it in the fireplace. The next step was to put in a double wall, as the heat was too much. Next I will rig up something to suspend them at any location and swing them out for recovery.

I've made coffee, roasted a chicken on top, made homemade pizza inside and other things I can't remember. I often use it to bake potatoes.

Occasionally simmer / "boil down" sauces, chilies, warm buns, etc... on the top

...but the best thing:
If you like thick crispy potato skins (or the baked potato in them): Wrap a few potatoes individually in aluminum foil and put them in the ashes in the fire box. Mmmm....

I am so disappointed that my high efficiency stove (insert) despite me getting it with a large flat exposed top, won't bring water to a real boil.

Yes - definitely. Soups, stews, roasts. We had a really heavy Lopi with a nice flat top. We "learned" the VERY FIRST time - all pots, pans etc HAD to be on a trivet. Set directly on the stove top - everything got too hot. On a trivet it was just right.
