Hydroback Cable

I found a company that sells the Hydroback cables locally,

Does the company have a web presence? Could you post the info on the company, or just send me a PM. My cable is only about 66" long overall. It has a number M15088 0791 on it. Who is the Mfr? I thought it might be a Midwest Controls or a Morse, but I haven't found any numbers that match. Most direct routing would require a cable of about 24--36". Thanks.

I received my cable today, and it looks just a Morse heavy duty control cable. The only numbers that are on it are M15140 1629 . Both ends are the same. The M may stand for Morse, I will try and verify. I think what I will do is to connect both cables with long treaded nut and slick it up with cable lube and pull it through the tunnel. Just hope it does not jam up in the tunnel and scrape the hyd hoses or rip some wires out.

I think this is a custom cable made for PT. The number you cite is the PT number for the part.

I have been changing the Hydroback cable (tram pump cable) about every 400 hours on my 1430 - they seem to break at about that time. Not sure why, but I certainly do a lot of shuttle work moving and placing rocks and handling materials so it gets a lot of exercise. I had been buying them from PT but this last time I decided to get a couple on hand since the machine is approaching 1600 hours. I ended up purchasing two for less than one from PT, and all I had to do was spec the ends and length and then get a quote while on line. On my PT the cable only has a 2" travel, and that dictates the dimensions of the bulkhead end fittings, which must fit the hydroback spring centering device, and the overall length was 84". the Cable type is a 40 series standard armored core design. I installed one yesterday (before the old one failed this time) and it works fine - on the 1430 when the cable fails you lose forward tram capability (the pull direction on the cable) but still have reverse since the cable can still push even when the core is broken. The failure mode is a good thing since I usually am working in places where the way to safety is reverse!! Anyone who mows or handles material on slopes or near the edge of a drop might want to think about what would happen should the cable fail - you might want to factor that into your manuvering strategy!

Special orders are not returnable, so be sure you measure and design your cable carefully - I had an old broken one to use for measurements.

I wished you would have told me this about a week ago. I have the same cable on my 1445. You are right, they are about 1/2 of what PT charges.

Do you know the PT part number for the cable on the 1430? The part number for my 1845, according to the manual, is the same as the part number for JJ's machine--M15140. Perhaps all the 1400 and 1800 series mowers use the same part.

If it is the same could you post the specific specs you use to order the cable from the vendor?

Laughs - everything is half of what PT charges. When i do buy something through PT, I just figure i am paying for the support they provide. Terry has always been very helpful to me.

Sorry JJ - did not want to post the information until I had the part and verified that I bought the right thing - just received it and installed it a couple of days ago, and it is amazing how stiff the old one had become - the treadle is kind of touchy now, but I did clean up and lube the hydroback as part of the install. I bought the first three from PT and they give good service - All I had to do was call tell them what I needed for my machine- did not even need the part number, but they were $110.

Bob: I looked up my 1430 part number and it is M15140, and the hydroback itself is M15012. The drawing number I assigned to my Midwest cable is PT1430TramCable and you may be able to call that up after you create a log in id. My cable was a 2" travel which fits my hydroback - (JJ mentioned a hydroback with a 3" travel, and that would take a different bulkhead end). On my cable, the overall length is 84", and the cable is Series 40 standard armor shield and core, and both cable ends are 1/4" x 28 thread by 2" travel with a 5/8"x18 thread bulkhead end. Attached is an Adobe file if it comes through - I am sure that the price will change over time, so do not be upset is you call up this drawing in the future and the price has changed!!

The design procedure is pretty easy on their web site, so you may just want to do that. It does sound like the part numbers are the same for the machines you mention, but remember that PT makes design improvements over time, and everyone needs to check their part dimensions or part number before ordering or they may have a part that they need to invent a use for. I guess one of these would make a bulletproof throttle cable!

Did you happen to check on the price of the Hydroback unit? The folks here at PowerTrain said they could order one for about $65. My cable is the same as yours and Bobs. So the travel would be the same. I was thinking that the 3 in would give me more travel on the shift lever on the VSP, while mounted in a different hole on the end plate.. I have some pictures below. Have you tried to mount the end fitting in a different position, like the three holes in the triangular plate. I would suppose that you can order the Hydroback unit with with 10 lbs spring or the 20 lb spring.

I just replaced my hydroback cable and now I need to figure out a way to get the nuetral to work. when I stop the tractor it wants to keep moving forward, I have adjusted the cable back and forward with no luck. keeps wanting to move forward. Any body have any tricks for this? I was thinking about using spacer? Just wondering if anybody else has overcome this problem?

I kept on searching this forum and I found that someone posted the instructions on how to do the adjustments. So I will be trying that, hope it works.

I was having trouble with my PT422 not stopping when releasing the pedal and sticking off center. I ended up lubing everything. I think the hydroback (the thing with two springs in it) was the worst of it. I sprayed some silicon teflon lube into the non-cable end (in both inner and outer cylinders) and worked it back and forth. I also made a very small adjustment in the cable position. It seems to be OK now. I have over 800 hours on the machine.

Today I replaced the hydroback cable. It had so much internal friction that when I released the pedal (either going backwards or forwards) the machine would keep going. When I took the old one out, I had to pull it with pliers and with the cable stuck in a vice to make it move. The new one was easy to move by hand. The PT422 now brakes immediately when I release the pedal. It is also a lot more sensitive to pedal operation. I have to relearn pedal operation. At about 900 hours of operation and 11 years old the cable was way past do for replacement.

I took the old one apart ( I had to cut one end off) and even with it pulled half way out of the housing there was a lot of friction. My advice it don't wait so long.

I hope you didn't get it from Pt. Morse sells that cable for about 1/2 what PT wants. I had to replace mine last year, and I learned about the Morse cable from one of the other PT owners after I purchased mine from PT. About $120.

I know this thread is old but my cable just snapped on me yesterday and I did not want to wait almost 2 weeks to get my cable. Weather I go with powertrac or the custom cable internet companies, Canada Post will make me wait dearly for it. Our local boat building company told me to try the auto shop and or a marine supply store. Sure enough, the auto parts store in my little city was able to make a cable for me as per Don's specs. Took just under 2 hours from the time I called it in to when I went to pick it up! Not as cheap as some internet places but still cheaper than PT and no waiting. So if your cable snaps on you, you may want to try your local auto shop first.

Before my cable broke, my pedals were getting so stiff that to go forward, I had to press down on the right pedal AND lift up on the left pedal! Now it is so sensitive, I have to take some time to get used to it first. The first two times I went backwards, I almost got a whiplash! No kidding. The whole tractor just hopped. I definitely recommend changing out your cables even before they break.
