For those of you who have followed me from the beginning, I hope you guys aren't getting tire of me yet. You have help me a lot and I really appreciate it. The dealer has ordered my owner's manuel. Will be here Friday. But I need to prepare for some maintenance for Saturday. I bought 1 gallon of Rottela T, and a new oil filter. I bought a new fuel filter. I bought both air filters. I plan in buy new blades next payday, the 30th. The starter is being rebuilt as we speak. I don't understand the hydro-tranny. There is a screw on filter on the front on the rear axle, is this one that I want to replace? If so, is this the tranny filter? Do I plan on drainning it? And replacing it with what type of fluid? I prefer O'Rielly Auto, AutoZone, or Walmart. Is there any maintenance for the hydralics (hoses, fluid, fittings)?? Again thanks guys.

For info. This is a 1993 455 60"

If you get the manual Friday review what you plan to service in the manual before you start into things over the weekend.

I have a '98 455. Great mowing unit. The screw on filter you refer to on the front of the transaxle is the hydro filter. There is also a drain plug. I don't recall the location but I think you can see it from the rear of the tractor. The dip/fill location is under the seat. Usually you need to slide the seat forward. Take the dip stick out first to reduce a vacuum and speed the draining. I run my tractor a bit first to warm up the fluid before draining. Once the fluid has drained spin off the filter and replace. You will most likely need a filter wrench to loosen it up. You will need a small funnel to put the new fluid in.

It helps to know the fill capacity so you know about how much to put in and stop a bit short to start checking the fill level. Take it slow filling as it goes in slow with such a small funnel. Refer to the manual but I think you check the fluid level with the stick not screwed in.

On what fluid to use. I use the recommended JD fluid. You going to buy fluid anyway and for me I would rather pay a little bit more and know what I'm putting in is right. I buy the larger pails at times for my 455 and 4410 but I keep a clean gallon jug to pour into first. Make it much easier to hold while you pour.

If you have not done so I would change the engine oil as well. I did all the fluids when I picked up my 455 so I knew where I was starting at. Great tractor. Take good care of it and it will take good care of you.
