Can anyone tell me if the hydro fluid flows through the system with just the engine running, or does the tractor need to be moving to get flow through the system?

Tractor is 4310 JD E Hydro

The fluid is pumped through the "system" whenever the engine is running.

Thanks, I was hoping it worked that way.
Letting the tractor warm when it's cold also warms the hydro oil.

Although the engine will come up to temp much faster. It only has to heat up 3 to 4 quarts of oil, in a CUT, while that hydro contains a couple of gallons of very cold fluid. It takes it much longer to come up to temp. The sluggish hydraulics and rather loud hydro whine alone will let you know it's still cold. :D:D

Does it hurt to drive the tractor with cold Hydro oil?

Define cold? Just baby it a little till it gets flowing...like BP wrote-it will let you know if it's not happy.

Yup, the temp gauge may read "Ready to Go", but that hydro will still be cold. Once the temp gauge is up, gently back the tractor out and gently move around a bit. It takes a while in 10 degree weather, but within ten minutes or so, the hydro quiets down to more normal sound. Your ears become attuned to it after a dozen cold starts or so and you "hear" what it's saying to you.

They do sell "hydro heating pads", no kidding!!! I doubt I will be getting one anytime soon.:D

Transmission heaters are also available from JD, as well as engine block heaters.

I don't let my 4010 warm up here in Virginia. I just start it up and use it at 1500 rpm for a few minutes before revving to 2000-2200.

If you're living where your starts are below zero F, you probably need to warm it up a bit.

The dealer always makes sure that we buy the low vis hydro fluid. Guess south of about SC, the high vis stuff might be okay.

If it's cold, I let mine idle for a bit. I once exploded a filter on my TZ25 at 0f, so pressure obviously do run a bit higher with cold oil.

NH also lists a tranny heater. If I was that worried about it, I'd just leave a 100w light running under the rear end over night.
