hydraulic fluid for FX28D

I was changing the hydraulic fluid in my FX28D for the first time. I drained the fluid, changed the filter and refilled. My question is--the fluid that came out was red--like transmission fluid--the JD 303 fluid looks like oil--not red. Did I put the wrong stuff in?

I have a manual for a 336D (the closest american model). It says JD303 fluid. Is some 303 fluid red?

Nope, JD303 is not red, but it IS the correct fluid. Automatic Transmission Fluid is red, and is often used as a less-expensive substitute for JD303. I've read that many tractors come from Japan with ATF installed. Does no harm, they say. But JD303 is what the manufacturer specifies, so you did good.

My FX24d had red/pink fluid in it, and when I was building/hooking up the FEL much was lost to leaks etc. Added 303 equivalent, then saw comments on xmission fluid. Topped off with 2 Qts of xmission fluid. Color is the same as original now, and the owner feels better. NO difference in tractor operation.

Ok, I guess I'll see how it runs now that it seems I've done it right. It had something called a CAPA CP-175VL-35 filter. I put a NAPA 1229 in place (which number I got off another post)--seemed to fit fine. After I saw the fluid, I figured I ought to check and see.
