Now that I've owned a tractor for a few months, I'm interested in just how the hydralics can do so much work. There's lots of smart folks on this site, so maybe someone will save me a trip to the library. What are the principles behind how my loader can lift so much?

The way I understand it works is take the pump pressure in PSI and multiply it by the circumference of the hydraulic cylinder piston to get the total (breakout force) of the hydraulic cylinder.

Continuing from my previous post. Just for example, 2100 PSI pump, 1.5" piston diameter- 2100PSI x 4.71"=9891 PSI (over 4 tons). That does not equal lift weight though as the cantilever effect, tractor weight, bucket and etc weight has to be taken into consideration to give a safe total lift weight.

Circumference? Why not the area of the cylinder? Your 1.5" cylinder has an area of ~1.75 sq inches.

I played at teaching this stuff for a while - here's what I would tell the class:

Hydraulic PRESSURE ( pounds/square inch ) times AREA (square inches) equals FORCE (pounds).

To figure out how much cylinder force is showing up at the bucket, you need some of that dreaded trigonometry (ugh) or maybe even a free-body diagram (illegal in some states)

yes the class of lever needs to be considered also. You may be able to calculate the force of a cylindar but there is more to it than that, but those with self proclaimed education seem to be listened to more than others. But that is a discussion for another day. Oh by the way if you pay for the body is it free!!
