Forgive me if this is a really dumb question, but I feel like I gotta ask it. With an HST should you always put it in neutral if you're idling for a short time? Also, what about when you turn the tractor off and restart it? My dealer told me to just leave it in gear all the time, but that just didn't sound right. I'm a newbie so I'm still learning. Thanks

I do not put my HST in Neutral. I get off to open gate etc I will set parking brake and allow pedal to come to center.

When I start I push in the clutch. On my tractor the clutch must be in to start.

I do not put my HST in neutral when I stop.... I either put on the break or lower the front end.

I will usually lower the RPM.

Only need the clutch to start

I had a gear tractor and will never go back..

My last 2 tractors have been HST units and I never take them out of gear unless I am changing from L to M or H. I do set the parking brake if I leave the Cab, and drop the FEL.

I too seldom take my HST tractor out of gear.

DHB, your grader blade needs some paint. No rusty implements behind new tractors for avatars.

What clutch do you have push in to start on a HST?

If you are on hill or your HST does not center 100% every time just set the parking brake or lower a ground engaging implement.

When hooking up 3PH implements on level ground I will some times put my BX in neutral so I can rock it hair if needed to connect the implement.

Your life, your tractor, do what makes you feel comfortable and safe.

Thanks for the help.

I guess I'm the oddball on this one. I always go to neutral and set the brake when I get off the tractor. I'd hate to find out that the tractor developed a bit of creep when I'm paying attention to something else. Mine won't start in gear and I'm fine with that.

If the HST pedals are adjusted correctly, when you take your foot off the pedal it is in neutral. Same as a geared tractor that you would shift to neutral and leave the range speed in gear, lock the brakes and get off when need be. No matter how you choose to do it, always lock the brakes or plant the loader or rear implement firmly on the ground to prevent accidental roll.
