How worried should I be - JD 2305 Front Axle

Do you have the service or owners manual?
Maybe you can look it up on line,, but,, are you sure the axle calls for gear oil, or did you guess?

My JD calls for HyTran (whatever it is called by JD,,) transmission oil in the front axle. The tractor is a 4105'

My 4410 owners manual calls for Low Viscosity Hi-Guard in the front differential assembly. I poured in 80W-90 once and then went to read the owners manual. I won't make that mistake again.

My manual calls out for 80W-90 gear oil in the front axle. I think there was even a bold note saying do not use transmission oil. The synthetic Amsoil I put in there states to use in applications calling for 75W- or 80W-90 applications.

As far as metal shavings,, some is normal,
an excessive amount indicates to me that someone operated the tractor in 4WD a lot,, when turning on hard ground. JMHO

I am new at this, so not sure what is considered normal or excessive. Wish I would have taken some photos. I am the 3rd owner, but I know the guy I bought from personally, and I know he barely used the tractor. No idea what the first guy did with it though. There are grass clippings still hanging around underneath, so I assume he used it for mowing.

I have the 200X FEL also, and the tractor was not properly ballasted when I got it, which sounds like it could be hard on the front axle as well. The ballast box had a single cinder block in it. I have since filled the rear tires with PG antifreeze, and added several hundred pounds of scrap metal bolts to the ballast.

Well, if that's the reason it should have been on both sides, and 400h is not a lot of use. And tractors don't self destruct even with extensive use of 4WD on hard ground, a lot of those that use a loader always run in 4WD without problems, a least proper axels with planetary reduction gears.

I already changed my front axle gear oils, twice before my 450 hrs, but my next service I will switch to the fully synthetic Amsoil gear oil. I don't know why I didn't think of Amsoil the first time, but their line of fully synthetic products is of the highest quality. I went online today, and found they really are much more than just a motor oil supplier.
