Does anybody have a diagram or have suggestions on me pulling my axle on my 5300 so I can work on the brakes. I appreciate it. Let me know and I'll pm you an email address.

My suggestion would be for you to purchase the tech. manual from selectmanuals.com, it is $29.95. I have not purchased anything from them, others have indicated they did and no problems reported. In looking at the tech. manual for 5X10 tractors, one needs the manual more to put things back together.

Also when purchasing parts make sure you give them your serial number.

Please consider posting how things went as I think many would be interested in that.

I'm going to take pictures and gonna try videoing it. I talked w/ a john deere mechanic and he said this is a fairly common problem with these tractors. I just can't believe noone has documented it yet.
The tech told me how to do it. He said its really not that bad of a job, but you had to remove the fender. For the life of me I don't see why.

Soon to find out. :D

Might need to remove the axle housing to release the axle from inside via snap ring removal.

My comments are based on 5X10. I do feel it will work for the 5X00. Still suggest you get the manual

The removal of the fender is to get it out of way, so that the ROPS can be disconnected and not damaged when holding up the final drive assembly. The following is a cut and paste from the tech. manual for 5x10. Sorry no pictures, so you can see A,B etc.

Remove and Inspect Brakes

1. Remove final drive assembly.
Remove tire. (My guess if the tire has fluid around 600 pounds a 14.9D28 tire can hold 53 gallons of fluid. Even if just water that is 53*8)
Tractors without cab: remove ROLL-GARD.
Drain hydraulic
Close all openings using caps and plugs / Disconnect lines (A and B).
Disconnect draft link sway linkage from final drive housing.
Attach lifting chains or strap to final drive housing
Remove twelve cap screws (C).
Remove final drive assembly.

2. Remove back plate (A) and friction disc (B).
NOTE: Piston assembly is press fit into final drive housing. Remove only if necessary.
3. Remove piston assembly (C) using a pry bar. Pry at three retractor locations (D) evenly until piston assembly is removed.
4. Inspect piston ring and piston ring bore in axle housing
5. Replace the inner and outer O-rings (A and B).
6. Remove retractor spring (C).
7. Inspect parts for wear or damage

My comments
Thanks for posting that. I wish I was at my tractor cause again I don't see what rops has to do with the axle. I reckon I'll have to take a flash light out there tonite and look at it. I'm going into the elevator before sun up and leaveing after it goes down.

The ROPS is connected to what you will be taking off. I was able to copy a picture into a word document and save as a .pdf, from the tech. manual. The .jpg is the back of my tractor, at least my ROPS, long brass looking bolts hold ROPS onto the final drive assembly.

You the man. Thank you. I see now. Yup that is what mine looks like.
I couldn't understand cause I was thinking the axle would come out like in a truck. Sorta anyway.
That's some stuff to go thru just for some brakes you know it?
