So I just bought a 3ph post hole digger/auger from TSC. Haven't messed with it as of yet.. tomorrow probably. So once I get it on there, how do I go about taking it off and parking it while making it reasonably easy to re hook up? Brushhogs, discs ect just sit there till next time.. this I dont believe will stay upright till next use. do you guys build some sort of rack to set it on , or just what do you do? Dig a hole and leave the auger partially in the ground to stabilize it? Seems that would be detrimental to the well being of the auger. So before I go out and play with it tomorrow... give me a game plan please.:D

Hi neighbor! Do some searches on parking a PHD. There have been numerous threads over the years on parking a PHD. Some folks here have come up with some ingenious and elaborate stands for them, lots of pictures in the threads too.

I went simple and just set two 4x4 posts in the ground about 5ft apart, then put another 4x4 across the top (about 6 ft off the ground). I put an eye bolt through the horizontal post, in the middle of it. Now I just back the PHD underneath the horizontal 4x4 and using a short (about 5ft long) piece of 1/4" chain and chain the PHD to the eyebolt. The 5ft chain attaches to two points on the frame of the PHD to help balance it, with the tip of the auger resting on a piece of wood sitting on the ground.

I have some pic's of it on my pc (this is my laptop) and it crashed sometime ago, so I can't get to them now, otherwise I would post it here. I do have a pic posted in a couple of the older threads though, if you search you may come across it.

I hang mine. I've used a big tree limb near the machinery shed for years. That means its outside of course, but not a not of exposed bearings on a PHD. With my new building I hang it from a truss/rafter with a chain. I do let the auger point rest on the ground so the entire weight is not on the truss. Some stores use a T shaped metal stand to make stand up for display but it's not any easier to hook up.

I back it up to one of my 6x6 posts in my pole barn and use 2 ratchet straps to strap it to the post. Seems to work pretty well for me.

When I had a 3ph auger I set it in the ground with an oversized hole and put a block under the hitch. Can't see what is detrimental about the auger sitting in a hole. I live in the southwest so rain and rust isn't a big problem.

I've got an old shed out here with a couple lean-to roofs on it. I'm going to have a look and see if there is a good place to hang it under there. I like the hole in the ground for the auger and a block to sit it on, but from what I've seen so far in the 3 months I've been in SC the auger would be sitting in water all the time. Lots of rain here..

I have a flail mower coming in the next couple days, I need to find cover for it too

This is what I use. Attach digger to loop..disconnect from tractor and swing it under the roof. The shed has a wall now on the end. Very easy to connect/disconnect.

I have a pallet with two wood uprights bolted to it, I simply set it on the pallet, use a ratchet strap to hold it up and then disconnect it from the tractor. Nice because I can move it around as-needed on a pallet jack, forks on the tractor or skid loader, or even the carry-all on the tractor.

Post Hole Digger Stand June 2011.jpg

Over the years I've tried a few ways to do this. Hanging it from a tree branch worked, but it wasn't where I wanted it. I also hung it from a beam in a barn, but it was always in the way. For quite awhile I just drilled it into the ground a little ways and left it like that. But my favorite, and current method is to hang it from some posts with a beam across the top of it off in a corner where it's easy to get to, but not in the way of anything else.
