I have an old beat up used 5' brush cutter. The previous owner appears to have used grease in the gearbox, and maybe mixed with a little oil too. Pretty sure the gearbox leaks oil, though.

If using grease in the gearbox rather than filling with oil, how often do you fill it with grease, and how much grease do you put in? Since you can't use a fill port to gauge it, do you just fill it until no more can go in, or would it be a problem if you put too much in?

I keep mine filled to the middle of the housing

I figure a tube of corn-head equals about a short pint of oil.
If you took a big gulp from a pint of blackberry brandy, you'd have a short pint.

When a seal starts leaking on a gearbox, I tend to go to corn head grease to keep from having to tear into it. The corn head grease has enough flow to it to allow you to gauge the level the same way you would an oil. Tractor Supply carries it as 00 grease.
