How much does it cost to build a pole barn and what kind is best..

I bought a Menard's package for a 30 x 45 post barn with steel siding and roof. It was about $3500 if I remember right. About 3 years later, I am still digging 6 foot deep post holes and have 5 posts and 1 truss up. I should have cleared the site before buying.

That... doesn't sound right. Even three years ago before covid lumber prices, no way a 30x45 full kit with all metal was coming in under 10 grand for materials.

6 foot deep post holes? How far north are you in MI? Code is 42" in the south, most go 48".

In SW Florida, got free used telephone poles from power company (you need a way to transport them). Bought unused lumber trusses on Craigslist. Reused metal roofing from old barn. Doubled the size with more free telephone poles. Used 32 Ft metal trusses from barn tear down on Craigslist for the add on . Roofed it with metal at retail prices. Rent a skidsteer with auger for the holes, makes quick work. Used military wrecker (for which I built polebarn) to lift metal trusses.
Build bigger than you think. You’ll fill it up. Outside city limits so no permit

Not sure what kind of property tax laws you have but I switched from pole barns to hoop buildings because they aren't taxed here in Illinois. I put up a 50x160 hoop building that will pay for itself in less than 20 years just from the property tax savings.

We built a 40 x 48 in 2020 for $45,000. Local builder and very good at what he does. It has a concrete floor, electrical, commercial 18' x 14 high-overhead door/w a commercial garage door opener. This included excavating and crushed rock backfill around the perimeter & driveway. We built a second metal building in 2021. AKA horse barn 36' x 48' $150,000 and climbing. Custom everything including horse stalls. Cleary Builders did the work. Over 1 1/2 years behind schedule. Lots of quality issues and we do not recommend them.

Last year I built a 36x40. It cost me about $3000. i used 8” 16 ga. metal studs and built my own trusses. The low outside walls are 16’ tall. I notched a 4x4 post 16’ long and bolted to my tractor bucket. On the high end of the post I put a pulley and used the winch on my side by side to winch them up. I bought dwc channel to lath the trusses together and the. Screwed my roof to this channel(channel used to be called hat channel). I bought R panel for the roof. I had a bunch of barn tin and put that on the walls. I did this entire build by myself, it took me a month total but I did it with a torn rotator cuff and I was 63 years old.

But how do you support it in the middle with no poles??

The trusses distribute the roof load to the side poles.

I've been building professionally for 50 years. I really like building pole buildings but have found it's really tough to beat the pricing of a professional barn builder. The one thing I like is to have a couple courses of 2 x treated around the bottom instead of one. The bottom of the metal can get damaged by a mower with only a single 2 x.

After hurricane Irma I drove the back roads between my house near Jacksonville to Gainesville and saw many barns, pole barns, ect... destroyed. On the way back home I noticed the wooden post and prefab metal truss barns were pretty much untouched. June 2020 I paid $11,700 to have one built. Pretty much 50% posts, trusses, tin and labor and 50% for the concrete. 26'x42' and wish I went bigger. LOL

This is a quote I got for the pole building I had put up in 2019 in SE Pennsylvania. This is an open bay (no poles in the middle) that used attic trusses (10ft ceilings), and gave me a 14x36 upstairs that I use as an office. I added power, water and then poured the floor, so after insulating, adding a heater and sheetrock, it's probably $75k+ range. Couldn't be happier w/ it.
