As it stands now many people can't even pronounce most of the artificial ingredients listed on a processed food product let alone know what they are or if they are good or bad without extensive research

Honestly how many ingredients should peanut butter really have?

True dat. Without a degree in chemistry, who does really know what all that stuff is? There are also labeling loopholes that allow things like transfats to be present but not counted as transfats because they are slightly modified.

You can buy natural peanut butter made from just peanuts and salt I think.

My wife says "If you have to have a degree to pronounce the ingredients, or if it has more than 5 ingredients, it is probably bad for you."

Yes sir you certainly can!

Any natural foods store always has it. Sometimes a big box store stocks that choice too.

For the discerning palate pure cashew butter is pretty darn good too! :D

Actually, genetic manipulation of plants, fungi and bacteria is pretty darn precise these days. They don't just generally create mutations and screen for desirable qualities any more. It is perfectly possible and common to identify the exact gene you want in one species and then insert that gene into another. It isn't like building a house but there isn't a whole lot of "luck" involved these days. What takes time is all the testing afterwards.

I also despise Monsanto but there are so many potential uses for GM technology that you cannot just throw the baby out with the bath water. The Frankenfoods hysteria is exactly like the fears people had in the early 1970's when the first bacterial gene splicing projects were proposed. We now have many many important products available to us because of that technology and there hasn't been any "frankenbacteria" that has taken over the world.
Nobody is arguing against GMO research. Just don't force us to consume it. Label it. Don't plant it where it will contaminate other crops, or in the case of bees- help them die because it mimics the original plant- but isn't and so is short on nutrition - all for a fast buck now. --- Are your steel cut oats from a source you trust like Bob's Red Mill - (maybe organic as well)- or are they generic gmo oats?

I have been to Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukie, Oregon. I never knew they made so many products. Nice place.

I enjoy cooking occasionally. Usually when a recipe comes across Facebook that I like. I baked some chicken thighs with a homemade rub tonight that turned out quite well. I got this recipe from a phone app called Yummly that I use, especially when I have something in mind and what to find something new. My wife definitely appreciates when I cook.

We had a party a few weeks ago for her 50th birthday and I made all of the appetizers. That was fun too.

1) GMO foods are every bit as nutritious as organic. No evidence to the contrary. Protein is protein etc. Indeed, some GMO crops are designed to be more nutritious as with strains of rice that produce higher levels of Vitamin A.. (Agree that agricultural practices are better with organic farming generally but no evidence of any demonstrable nutritional differences)

2) though I make fun of Whole Paycheck, the closest grocery store to my house is a WF and I buy some things there including bulk grains such as steel cut oats. No idea if they are organic or not but they cost less than $2/lb.

3) back to recipes...i recently bought an electric pressure cooker that has changed our cooking habits dramatically. Steel cut oats are far more delicious than fast oatmeal and can be made in about ten minutes in the pressure cooker by pushing a button and walking away. One cup steel cut oats, two cups hot water. 3 minutes at pressure then release. Mix with nuts, dried fruit, butter or cream and a spoonful of maple syrup. Yum. Provides appropriate fuel for snow shoveling!

We have eaten steel cut oats for years- but just boil them on the stove. Sometimes I just add some to shredded wheat for a different texture.
I like Bob's Red Mill. I am buying organic all purpose flour for my bread made by them. I look for deals on it.
