How many hours does an alternator last on a NH compact tractor?

My TC29DA has about 500 hours, starts and runs fine, but the tachometer stopped working yesterday. A search here revealed a bad alternator as one possibility, even if still charging the battery. Will attempt to check wires ( p terminal) but curious as to general life expectancy for the alternator. Thanks.

It’s like anything, almost impossible to say an exact number of hours it will last but as a rule I’d say much longer than 500 hours.

They put tiny little rev counters in them. When the count times rpm divided by roll angle and left front tire pressure goes over 1500, the alternator phones the factory via a Bluetooth link for permission to disable the field current. What else could it be ???

My TC34DA has 530 hours. No problem with Tach or charging battery

Tc40 3100hrs.

Ford 1700, OEM Alt, 1400 hrs and 40 years old. Still trying to break-in that ole geezer .. I mean diesel.

If it's an electronic tach then possibly it's given up the ghost.
If it's a mechanical tach then check it's mechanical end and see if it's spinning inside.

Not sure how old that machine is but all parts don't last forever.

@TractorDale - Have you checked the wire coming from the alternator? Check it for continuity. If it is the same as most of the TC Series it's a single wire connector that runs from the back of the alternator all the way up to the instrument panel. I'd check that wire & it's connections first.

I really doubt the alternator influences the tach especially if the battery is charged enough it’s still starting but the alternator is easy to check. Just get a volt meter and check the battery voltage before and after starting the tractor.

Alternators are like universal joints... Some last forever and some don't.
