How many acres do you own?

It's a shame that yellowstone is going to go boom some
day and it will clobber a 300 mile radius. Lots of animals
have left the area and the vegetation is dieing not good.

if Yellowstone goes boom the whole north America is going to be out of life… the last eruption was 6 cubic miles of ash and lava

There are more cows in Wyoming than people. We only have 500K residents, so that means there is a lot of land.

The ranch use to be much larger, over a million acres. It's hard to mange that much land. Hell, I struggle with what I have. I'm not a rancher. I manage risk for the BCBS association. That is what pays the bills for the ranch. My neighbor is who runs his cattle on the land. I charge him what my taxes are. Good for him and good for me. He has to mange all the rangeland and meadows. He also has to make sure the fence is in good shape.

This ranch was always in the family. I was the only one that could afford to pay the inheritance tax, so it went to my sister and I.

Have you read the Joe Pickett novels?

I have not.

My current reading is an actuarial report on the mechanics of level funding in small and medium sized groups. Then I have to figure out how to develop a model that rates groups correctly so all Blue plans can rate consistently.

I guess someone has to do it.

Ha!

My sister is an actuary. I was an accountant.

The old joke was how can you tell the difference between an actuary and an accountant?

An accountant looks at your shoes when talking. An actuary looks at their own shoes when talking!

I guess one need to be a actuary or a accountant to get it...

I am an acuturay and I do get it. I never fit the mold of an actuary, I kind of fell into this. Probably why they quickly promoted the one actuary that could hold a conversation and was not an introvert.

I have a lot of actuaries under me that can barely spell their own name, but can do amazing things with code and excel. In fact, one of my girl actuaries has a needle point picture, that she did all the needle work on, that reads..."a lady in the streets, but a freak in the sheets". I laugh every time I go into her office because it's so true.

One weird truism with Actuaries...they can't spell to save their life. Me included. I have never passed a spelling test in my life. We had to hire a spelling and grammar expert to review all the work for spelling errors. She stays pretty busy.

Had 6.5 acres 4 now, as we sold 2.5 acres 2 years ago to good friends to build a house. This was part of our retirement plan and wanted to pick our neighbors. It has worked out well.

Just shy of 7 acres. About 3/4 -1 acre for house, garage, driveway and yard. The rest is trees.

We have 17 acres plus another two that the feds technically own around the reservoir but we take care of it, mow it and put the chickens on it occasionally. We have about five acres of non-forest land and the rest is a mix of 50 year old pines and somewhat older oak, walnut, tulip poplar and big sycamores.

123 acres, mostly woods, a peat bog and equal swamp, 4 acre gravel pit, and a trout brook runs thru it. Bought it to homestead on and keep neighbors back.

Built a 28x36 off-grid home in 2008, 20x30 barn/work shop, woodshed, and finally a sawmill (open) shack. Mostly just live/work around here but we put on a few music shows each year and rent a few quiet camper lots.
Three tractors in and finally have one that doesn't need constant fixing!

25 acres on a river in southern Maine, about 5 miles inland from the Atlantic coast. Typical lot size in my area is about 5-50 acres. No neighbors nearby and we enjoy the quiet privacy.

Thanks for pics. Is the music festival a revenue source for you? Sounds very cool, someplace I'd go watch music in the great outdoors...

How many acres only tells half the story. I have 34 acres and 5 tractors. The engine horsepower adds up to 111, so that works out to 3.26 horsepower per acre.

That includes 10, 14.5, 15.5, 28, and 43 hp models from (4) different manufacturers.

(2) of those are lawn tractors, used only for mowing, a John Deere 15.5 and a Poulan 14.5 hp.

My other 3, which do the rest of the work, are the American “big 3”: John Deere 43 hp, Ford 28 hp, and IH 10 hp.

We have 90. In one day in 1986 we moved from Los Angeles to the mountains and never looked back. Central California foothills - wooded and rolling hills - some steep areas/ravines - with elevation from about 2300 to about 3000 - maybe higher? We have fenced the perimeter and cross fenced nine pastures inside so we can rotate the grazing (mitigating the fire risk from the house area outward). Have cows, goats, chickens, dogs, cats and in the area wild pigs, bob cats and the usual variety of critters. No real neighbors and I like the seclusion - just family and animals. We spend our time and money on constantly improving things and taking care of everything - I consider that a less expensive hobby than many others. I often describe the joy of living here as a 'feeling of space' everytime I go out each morning. I could never live in the city again.

Our daughter and son-in-law are building a house on the property on a nearby hill top with amazing views of the mountains. It is great to have them here and to know they will enjoy what we have created here.
