I see quite a few trucks at auctions with over 200,000 miles on them. Is there anything left when they get to this point? Today a water plant truck in Defiance Ohio sold for1300.00 dollars. Was 13 year old F-250 supercab with 4 wheel drive and 5.4 engine. Was it used up and ready for a new engine and trans. I do not know how long they last. Thank you for any feedback.

I'm driving a '93 1/2 ton Suburban that I paid $6K for 8-9 years ago. Its still worth a couple thousand. It only had about 60K on it when I bought it. It has about 115 on it now. So, about 55K in 8-9 years. It runs. It does what we need it to do.

As for that water plant truck... I've found that many municipal trucks have very low miles for their age. They just sit there idling for years and years and years.

I'm driving a '00 with 222,000 miles. I'm less concerned about miles then rust and age. I'd have bought that truck unless it was a complete rust bucket. I've got a '94 7.3 super duty with about 240,000 miles. I saw a 7.3 at auction with 310,000 miles, but it was a complete rust bucket. A buddy has a truck with 240,000 miles. My truck and my buddy's truck have the original engine and transmission. The 7.3 diesel needed repairs at over 200,000 miles. Back then we were able to buy a running 7.3 for $600 so we swapped it out.

My 1979 Ford Courier has close to 250,000 miles, and still going strong. It would be a sad day if I ever had to part with it.

Thank you for reminding of the mileage vs. hours thing. I bought a truck for the motor when I was in high school. Later found it was a low mileage engine ,but it came out of a cemetery. Lot of hours sitting running the heater and not moving.

I saw a garbage truck that had the service records written on the side. 32,000 miles and 2,700 hours.

And that Suburban I am talking about was a former fire department vehicle. Hence the 60K miles after 15 years.

My 2006 Ford F150 5.4 triton super crew 4X4 has 118,000.It has had its issues, rear end gears went out, replaced both manifolds,Spark plugs and a few other doodads.Other than that a pretty decent truck.I did buy it used with 40,000 miles on the OD back in 2012 for $18,000.

Sold my my 2003 Tahoe Z71 with 298,000 miles on it (back in 2013), only major repair was a rebuilt transmission at 147,000 miles. Its still running. I simply followed the scheduled maintenance. Rust will likely be the down-fall of this vehicle.

I have never had a long commute or driven a lot when I was farming. I have bought 3 new trucks since November 1982 and run them until the bodies/frames gave up due to salt/CaCl rot. Current truck is a 2004 GMC Sierra with 70,000 mi.

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 191,000 on it. I'm trying to stretch it to 250,000. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Truck longevity and maintenance sorta compliment each other.

5-6 years mostly depends on how much winter road salt dump.

I'm driving an '07 Tundra, bought new in July of '07, with 127,000 on the clock. An awful lot of that mileage was put on during winters, driving to the western mountains and the far north of Maine, snowmobiling (a lot of salt, calcium, brine treated roads) . When I'd return, I'd run it through the local "no touch" car wash with a bottom blast function. There is no discernible rust on any body panels and only minor on the frame, mostly on welds. Maintenance wise, oil/filter changes, tires, a rear axle bearing assembly, spark plugs at 100,00, and a water pump; uses no oil between services(7500 miles) and runs as new. I'm hoping to get another 9 years and 100,000+ miles out of it

My dad had an 84 F250 4x4 diesel with 115,000 miles that finally got retired in 2012 because the bed rusted out, no A/C, and the front hubs were trashed. The engine ran fine, even though we had to change the fuel pump every few years. Mostly farm miles.

An 03 F350 with a 6.0 diesel went to about 200k miles before it was hard to start in the winter. That truck was in the shop for about 6 months during its lifespan due to injector problems.

02 Excursion 7.3l diesel with 300k miles and a new transmission at 170k miles. At 300k the engine started running rough and the transmission wouldn't shift reliably. Lots of city miles with payload on this one.

I had an 02 ford explorer sport Trac that went to 293k miles In 2011. Engine was fine, interior was falling apart and the rear doors only opened from the. If the truck was 4wd, I'd still have it. I see it riding around, and I hope can catch the guy at the store to ask how many miles it has on it now.

I have a 12 ram 2500 with 150k on the clock and runs great. I change the oil with full synthetic and change the air filter every other oil change. I'm planning on running it for atleast another year since these new truck prices about make me sick looking at a new diesel!

Use and maintenance are really what makes a truck last or not last.
I have a 98 Ram with the 5.9 diesel, bought it new. Has 120,000 miles on it, looks and runs like a brand new truck. It's always in the garage when not in use and I always spray it off after I go sledding. (it's usually covered with salt) I do all my own maintenance on a regular basis.

Getting junky at 8-10 years as the tail gate will be rusted through plus the the cab corners and rockers will be getting rotten. By 10-12 years the cab corners and rockers are rusted through. Everything is salt damaged from brakes, fuel lines , brake lines and electrical grounding gremlins are appearing.
If the vehicle is faithfully washed and oiled add 2-5 years of extended life.
