How is the John Deere 990?

I went to the JD dealer day before yesterday to look for a 990 and the dealer didn't have one. He tried to talk me into a 5105 as well, but I don't want a turbo enhanced motor. I'm thinking that the 990 is the tractor for me, cause I've only heard good things about it, and it's simple. Now if I could only find one to test drive.

BTW maltpj, do those hydraulic lines ever get tangled up? They look mighty low to me.

No not yet. I rerouted them since I took that pic so they don't hang so low because I was worried about that too.

Did you add the loader after buying the tractor? Or, was the tractor delivered with those hydraulic hoses like that?
All the tractors I've seen (not just Deere) had the hoses sheathed in an abrasion resistant sleeve.

If it was delivered like that, I'd send that picture to your dealer and ask him why those hoses weren't protected.
Remember, that's high pressure hydraulics there. A pin hole projects fluid at a high enough pressure to penetrate your skin with no problem. High pressure fluids (including gases (air)) can also cut like a sharp knife.
If you (or anyone reading this) ever has that happen...go directly to the hospital.

This is a quote from a 790 manual:
If an accident occurs, see a doctor immediately. Any fluid injected into the skin must be surgically removed within a few hours or gangrene may result. Doctors unfamiliar with this type of injury should reference a knowledgeable medical source. Such information is available from Deere & Company Medical Department in Moline, Illinois, U.S.A. Information may be obtained in the United States and Canada only by calling 1-800-822-8262.

I am also looking into JD990. I like it a lot but there are some things that bother me:

The weight (3175) is on the light side, TYM400 is 3960, TC40 is 3433???

the rear lift (I assume 3 point) is 1573 compared to TYM400 2865, TC40 is 2330???

I definitely need strong hydraulics for lifting logs using the loader/forks.

Take a look at the 5xxx series.

The 990 is a great machine...but an old design. That's fine with me, as I'm quite willing to work within the machine's capabilities.
But I don't make a living on a tractor.

QFT - Quoted for truth

I never took the hydraulic lines that seriously until I saw what happened to a guy I know. He hasn't been to work for weeks. I never thought that the fluid got that hot either. I do understand the difference between a burn and a chemical burn, but he was burned both ways.
