I've always liked squash fried. Haven't had any this year because the wife cuts it up, puts in skillet with butter and sausage and cooks til tender. Pretty good. Getting some decent tomatoes this year and making a little bit of salsa? I've always called it picante sauce. IMG_4685.JPG

Well finally got some extended dry weather and some heat (and too hot actually) so have most all my garden planted just a few more things to go.

String beans, cukes, summer squash, zukes, tomatos, peppers, eggplant are all in along with some cailiflower swiss chard, brussel sports and sunflowers. And the gladious are coming along real well right now too.

Just need to plant some Romano bush bean, the rattle snake pole beans and a second planting of costata zukes for the seed saving group at the local library.

Next will have to start the commercial plantings at work usually towards the end of the month. The greenhouse tomatoes down there are being planted now.

We have gotten some timely rain showers this spring and summer, the gardens have flourished, but sometimes Mother Nature has an Attitude!

All of the rain this month has killed the garden. Purple hull peas are the only plants that still look healthy

I went out to my garden and all of my tomato plants were gone. Either rabbit or cutworms. Grrr....

After a soggy start in April and May the rest of the garden is planted and growing well. March saw the annual potato planting with this years crop of reds and kennebec. In April between rains we planted onions, beets, couple rows of bush beans and a couple rows of golden queen corn. Early May we planted some okra and that was it. Between the middle of April and the end of May we received 9 inches of rain the ground was so wet I couldn't get the tractors in to get anything done. June came and things dried enough to plant some more golden queen and silver queen corn, three more rows of buch beans, one row of sweet potatoes, about 30 tomatoes to include Cherokee purple beef steaks, cherry tomatoes. Cukes, crooknecks, zucchini and cantaloupes finished the planting season.
Now we have put up beans and eaten fresh off the early planting. Have been enjoying the fresh beets and onions too. I would like to motivate the wife to get with processing some of the beets for winter. We are enjoying the early red potatoes creaming some and grilling others. Have enjoyed fried zucchini donated by a neighbor that got his out earlier than I but much anticipating the arrival of the hillbilly popcorn(okra) but it will be several more weeks.
Happy gardening to all.

Been wondering when all the garden pics were coming here

Been a wicked month here in the Northeast wind and rain...lots of rain and cool weather too with little sun most of the time. Most of my tomatoes look good though big and green and no sign of blights (Alternaria solani or Septoria leaf spot) there really has been no humidity or stagnant air.

Still haven't found time to stake some of them up yet though but maybe tomorrow

My peppers on the other hand look terrible. I had remove a lot of leaves all spotted and yellowed and the wind seems have some bent right over. I cleaned them up some, weeded and fertilized so they will probably come along still.

Eggplants seems to be holding their own and the gladiolus are loving all the moisture too though pest pressure has been high on them. Still don't really no know what eats the leaves its like they are sawed right off thrips maybe? I sprayed them with an insecticide seems to help.

Deer found their way and topped off a few things mostly sunflowers and some peppers too but not enough damage to worry about.

Cukes are staring to vine and flower now and so is the summer squash

Beans on the other hand have been freaking disaster! Have planted all 3 types twice now. The rain did in the first round of planting and crows and maybe those free ranging rabbits my neighbor let loose did in a second crop as the came up. The crows yanked the plants looking for seed and something ate all the tender young leaves like overnight it seems.

Screw it have lots of brussel sprouts coming strong as is the chard and harvested lettuce and cherry tomatoes from container plantings. Herbs are mainly all ok though basil is taking a hit but I have more maybe 3 dz plants to transplant so that'll help

Down at work its been awful wet too but put down over 3000ft of plastic mulch had purchased two 2000ft rolls with the unit and only about a third of one roll is left but boy was it an effort in all the wet soil. Overall the new Earthtools mulch layer worked good but bent a plow opener on a big rock though. Didn't stop us much really and kept going after I pounded it straight somewhat

Our commercial garlic is looking great maybe harvest by the end of the month and we started picking raspberries and blueberries

Plums will be next if the beavers don't get them all seems a family of beavers started homesteading in the farm's pond and they took down over dozen plum trees right along the edge of the water.

My garden at home...

It has been a crazy year. Lots of rain. Early spring brought early produce in abundance but now rains and stout humidity taking toll . I failed at peppers and yellow squash. Packages said yellow but butternut grew

Ha that's when they started in on my garden after I finally mowed all the lawn

So I have spent the better part of last week and this week giving some TLC to my plants...the rains have slowed down immensely the sun has been out more and the temps have skyrocketed. A little hand pruning of yellowed and diseased leaves on tomatoes and peppers, plus some hand weeding around each plant still get a few in planting holes though the black plastic does great job otherwise. A couple of doses of water soluble fertilizer after things dried out some. And run the pony tiller thru the rows to cleanup weed growth there.

Did have to hand weed the 500 gladiolus cuz its a tight planting nd that took some time (and much easier after a rain shower( but do they look great. Stood afew back upright thatwere growing slanted, that rain wrecked havoc. Original bean plantings are gone but replanted string beans one last time today. As it is will be late harvest.

So have picked a few cukes, cherry tomatoes, and enough zukes to make a big pot of tomatoes, green pepper onion garlic and squash all seasoned with my fresh herbs and celery. My blueberries look great and been picking some too. Chard is coming strong, eggplant is flowering. Roma plum tomatoes are heavy with fruit and the Celebrity tomatoes are looking good as are the Sunflowers. Brussel sprout are getting big too. Still waiting on all the peppers to set flowers but not too soon as I want them to gain some size they were wicked stunted with all the poor weather...but getting nice and green now.

Down at work the garlic is just about ready to harvest

Watering this morning. We've been very pleased with the differnence the raised beds have made vs our past endevors with the North Carolina clay LOL World of difference from this year compared to last couple of years.

Screen Shot 2017-07-27 at 6.43.31 AM.png

We have more dirt, and will probably double the beds next year.
