I've always liked squash fried. Haven't had any this year because the wife cuts it up, puts in skillet with butter and sausage and cooks til tender. Pretty good. Getting some decent tomatoes this year and making a little bit of salsa? I've always called it picante sauce. IMG_4685.JPG

Well finally got some extended dry weather and some heat (and too hot actually) so have most all my garden planted just a few more things to go.

String beans, cukes, summer squash, zukes, tomatos, peppers, eggplant are all in along with some cailiflower swiss chard, brussel sports and sunflowers. And the gladious are coming along real well right now too.

Just need to plant some Romano bush bean, the rattle snake pole beans and a second planting of costata zukes for the seed saving group at the local library.

Next will have to start the commercial plantings at work usually towards the end of the month. The greenhouse tomatoes down there are being planted now.

We have gotten some timely rain showers this spring and summer, the gardens have flourished, but sometimes Mother Nature has an Attitude!

All of the rain this month has killed the garden. Purple hull peas are the only plants that still look healthy

I went out to my garden and all of my tomato plants were gone. Either rabbit or cutworms. Grrr....

After a soggy start in April and May the rest of the garden is planted and growing well. March saw the annual potato planting with this years crop of reds and kennebec. In April between rains we planted onions, beets, couple rows of bush beans and a couple rows of golden queen corn. Early May we planted some okra and that was it. Between the middle of April and the end of May we received 9 inches of rain the ground was so wet I couldn't get the tractors in to get anything done. June came and things dried enough to plant some more golden queen and silver queen corn, three more rows of buch beans, one row of sweet potatoes, about 30 tomatoes to include Cherokee purple beef steaks, cherry tomatoes. Cukes, crooknecks, zucchini and cantaloupes finished the planting season.
Now we have put up beans and eaten fresh off the early planting. Have been enjoying the fresh beets and onions too. I would like to motivate the wife to get with processing some of the beets for winter. We are enjoying the early red potatoes creaming some and grilling others. Have enjoyed fried zucchini donated by a neighbor that got his out earlier than I but much anticipating the arrival of the hillbilly popcorn(okra) but it will be several more weeks.
Happy gardening to all.
