Story not for the faint of stomach warning, walked the wife out to leave for work and did a quick scan of drive. What's that at the end of the drive, squirrel roadkill got to check it out so I go and give it a nudge to make sure it's passed. Tell my wife wait don't leave let me get the gloves to get it up. To my surprise it's still warm and limp, I look at her and say breakfast of course she thinks I'm joking. She leaves and I make a beeline to the fire pit in the woods and get a fire going right away. I skin it then make a spit to rotisserie the beast get a quick pic with the iPhone and off it goes to her at work. Now she says I'm a nut job for cooking the beast I tell her waste not want not that it's good to stay up on my survival skills. Squirrel season opened last Saturday and I've been looking over my woods for some and as usual never a chance at a shot so the way I see it is the good lord is providing what I seem to have trouble getting on my own. So my question to all of you is would you have made breakfast or not? All things being equal

As long as it wasn't bruised up too bad, I would dig in. With eating squirrels, the bigger issue would be those cysts they have growing on them. When I was semi-retired after getting out of the Navy, I ate squirrels and rabbits year round. {even had bbq coon on Christmas day} I had to throw a lot of them away because of those growths.

Growing up we would not eat squirrels that had "wolves"

Didn't know about the cysts in squirrels? As a youngster in the 70's we ate armadillo several times. Once in a bbq pit and a couple times a rotisserie. I liked it. Then started hearing they supposedly carried leprosy or something like that. Wasn't sure if true or a hoax but have never had it since.

Here's a "back garden" pict., from earlier in the season,

and the "front" garden,

Anyway, my gardens are doing really good, the sweet corn is now done, but I'm still picking a pail of tomatoes every couple days...

standard.jpg

and canning them, (BTW, those peppers are going to be "stuffed" for supper tonight!)

Also beans, beans, and more beans!

I dug the last of the garlic the other day,

and I dug the last of the Yukon Golds too,

Our fav squash is Butternut and we have a really nice crop of them, I've been picking some to eat and also giving some away,

I haven't picked them all, as many are still growing...

Anyway, there's a lot more going on in the gardens, but that's the hi-lites... lol

Great harvest Sawyer Rob. Most of my garden has been "toast" (literally) for some time. Canned tomatoes looked wonderful.
What is your recipe for stuff peppers?

Checked on my reds today. This is from sticking the shovel in the ground twice, once from each side of the row. I disturbed about 10" of the row taking them out. I have about 250' planted.

Our garden was really hit and miss this year. Tomatoes did quite well, sweet corn was good, cucumbers were fantastic. Lettuce and radishes were good earlier. But the melons were not good, and most of the ones we did get were invaded by bugs before we got to them. We did get a few, and are still getting some. I can't seem to get the peas to grow for $#!7. If, through some miracle, I get some to germinate, they don't last long before they die. Can't figure that out.

I had given up on the beans earlier, but they have started to produce nicely as of late. Froze another few packages today.

And back to the melons...we have this growing in the garden. Some sort of cross-pollinated melon I suppose? Looks kind of like a small young watermelon, but is ripe, and upon cutting it open it is quite clearly a cantaloupe. But it doesn't look like a cantaloupe on the outside, and seems to have a hint of cucumber flavor. What we have here might just be a cantawatecumber. At any rate, it is clearly a genetically modified organism of some sort. As such, I think it is supposed to be bad. But we're gonna eat it anyway.

My banana cantaloupes got cross pollinated with something a couple of years ago. They turned out to look more like a club than a banana. I need to buy some new seeds I guess.

I don't like posting recipes, I always forget something! lol But, i'll give it a try...

Poblano peppers are on the spicy side, so I cut the top off and clean them out good! THEN I put them in boiling water until they "just start" to soften up, (about 4 or 5 mins) this tones the "heat" down a little and makes the peppers cook faster in the oven.

The filling is a combo of 50/50 ground venison and spicy pork sausage browned in olive oil, with about 2/3 cooked rice to 1/3 meat mixed together with onion/garlic/pepper and what other spices I like. (the onion is browned with the meat) Many times I'll also add just enough home made tomato sauce to give the filling a hint of tomato flavor. You can add or subtract what ever you want, I do change it up a bit from time to time.

Anyway, mix it all together and stuff the peppers, putting them up right in a baking dish. I then bake them for an hour or so at 350*...

OK, what did I forget?

So yesterday, I picked a few apples to give to family and friends,

I'm looking forward to an apple pie!!
