How does your garden grow?

I planted a new lawn on June 15th in newly spread topsoil over a scrub lawn, and it rained gently overnight, hooray, I love it when the weather cooperates that way. Now some sunshine, please Our summer here has been very late this year and too cold for good gardening. I will have to continue with veggies from the store, grown way far south, or in a greenhouse that adds minerals to the medium to develop good taste, especially in tomatoes. Store bought tomatoes disappoint me every time. My clever wife will not refrigerate tomatoes from the store. She says that is what makes them so lacking in flavour. I think she has something there, too. Tomatoes are hard to grow here, slugs, caterpillars, cut worms, deer all take a big share, but they don't kill weeds unfortunately.

Planted 3 rows of corn and a row of green beans yesterday along with 11 yellow tomatoes. After .9" of rain in about 20 minutes I may have to replant. Haven't gone and looked yet

The Co-Op didn't have any Crimson Sweet seeds, so I got Sugar Baby and Charleston Grey's. I got them planted yesterday, as well as the two packages of bought Jalapeno plants. We are making lots of pepper, but not as big as I would like for making poppers. Maybe un-stuffed poppers? Un-popped stuffers?

We are eating all the sweet corn we can everyday. It is just about played out, but the field corn is just getting ready.



We cut the first melon tonight. It was a little sun burnt thing, and had a touch of white heart. I didn't think I used too much fertilizer, but I did give them lots of blue juice early on. Maybe too much. It was still good. And anytime I make melons before the 4th, I'm happy.

Where the sprinkler on the Armenian cucumbers has reached out into the new pea patch, they have come up nicely. But nothing else is up there, so I laid soaker hoses on the rows as far as they would go. I was planning on leaving them on 24 hours, then moving them down. Mamma just called me at work to say it is storming at the house right now. I guess it will be safe to turn off the soakers when I get in from work. I just wish I had got the next strand of string up on the tomatoes. Some of them will be on the ground.

The only thing I still have coming in are "Acre Peas", "Okra", and Carrots. The Lima Beans have all new blooms on them.

Big storm came through yesterday afternoon. Leaned some of the field corn over, and broke a limb off a cherry tomato. I picked a few ears of the field corn. It was alright, but after that sweet corn it tasted like hog feed



You've heard of cat and mouse. What about Orange and Butterfly? This young tom waits in the corn and weeds out the weak and slow from the butterfly population.

Does anyone know why my cukes are coming in like round balls (golf balls) and then the growth is stumped?

Not sure why, but I've had some of that on mine the last couple of weeks. My vines are playing out, so I replanted. Hope the new ones last longer than the first planting.
