How does a NOCO battery charger "desulfate" the battery?

The de-sulfation works by "pulsing" the electrolyte at a frequency to destroy, the sulfate crystals. I'm not sure that the sulfate wouldn't eventually break down the sulfate crystals completely. They would probably break loose from the plates first, but even laying on the bottom of the battery, the crystals should eventually break down completely.
I agree with you; it's not yet a proven science.

I use a stick welder to desulfate my batteries. The low amp chargers never seem to have the balls to get serious, but a stick welder at 50-100 amps can get the solution boiling violently, drop internal resistance and increase steady voltage. Sure, if you create hydrogen gas in a closed area, you can blow yourself up, so watch some videos and be smart. Oh, it still does not work on a totally neglected battery. But if you test your still kind of working battery, and it tests weak, you stand a good chance of boiling it back to life.

Purchasing a charger with desulfate mode is safer and easier to do, plus it seems to do the job.

At what voltage, obviously DC, is the welder's output?

Several months ago the battery on the 2010 diesel 6x4 Gator all of a sudden got sluggish. I have been plugging it in to the battery minder most of the time. When I do so it fires right up but if unplugged it is sluggish in three days. No, there's nothing bleeding off the battery. To this conversation there is no indication that that desulfate mode has improved the battery. The battery is around 2 years old. This isn't anything new, frankly. I really don't get more than 3 years in a battery.

The 6x4 is a rough ride on logging trails and I don't drive fast. But that battery gets bounced around even strapped down tight. It is much better with 300-400# in the back
