Horehound candy

I remember it - as medicine. Never cared for the taste, personally. Haven't seen or even heard of it for probably 50 years, until this thread.

Type in ***** hound and you will probably get a pop-up add for it.

Mark, now I know why you get pop-ups with cleavage. It's spelled "horehound," not "***** hound."

I've had horehound candy, but it was never a favorite. I remembered it tasting like a mixture of licorice (or liquorice) and root beer, and the online descriptions as posted earlier say that's the flavor.

I've always been a fan of the traditional licorice stick candy and even like licorice jelly beans. Licorice gets it's flavor from licorice root, but much of the candy is mostly flavored with anise seed extract. Anisette is a popular drink in Spain and mixes with water to form a white cloud drink that's very popular. Pastis in France, Ouzo in Greece, and Sambuca in Italy are all forms of the same liquor. Some of them contain both anise extract and licorice root. I've never been fond of the liquor, but Europeans seem to love it.

Tractor Supply sells a licorice made in Australia that is my favorite. It's expensive at $2.99 for a 7 oz bag. I did an online search for it and found that Amazon.com sells many flavors of Darrell Lea candies from Australia. If I have this stuff in my house, I'll eat 3 or 4 pieces daily until it's gone. The nice thing is nobody else eats it, so I have it all to myself.:D Maybe I should get some horehound too. I do like those exotic flavors.

You can find horehound at Groovy Candies and at Nostalgic Candy, as well as lots of other nearly forgotten items.
If I recall, that was in the bulk section of Safeway's candy (yes, bulk at SW) in the early 1960's rural Idaho.

You guys crack me up. One thing about it; the kids won't eat it until everything else in the house is gone. I just bought 3 bags at Hobby Lobby; my daughter had been keeping me supplied and I found out that's where she had been getting it. Now if I just had a stick of Landjaeger and a Grapette, I would be all set!

Just within the last couple of days, I heard Chester ask for it on Gunsmoke. And that's about all I knew about it until I read this thread. When it was mentioned that Cracker Barrel has it, I thought I might try it, but then when the descriptions and recipes were added, I realized that I'm glad I never tried it and don't intend to.

Come on Bird; I'm betting you used to eat cough drops when you didn't have a cough...this stuff is much better!
