homemade dump trailer

here are some pictures of a dump trailer i built this winter. the axle is from a horse trailer and all the steel is from a buddy who gets it as scrap for me. the bed is 4'x 8' and 12"h the cylinder is 4"bore double acting. i figure i can haul 2 ton on it . hinged the gate at 24" high so firewood wouldnt get hung up. it works great for firewood. also made a toolbox on the front and the lid when open makes a good table to work on chain saws. gate uses pin to keep closed but i am going to put a double latch system like on a dump truck & hook it up to open & close by hydraulic cylinder. need to put steel sheet in floor yet and paint when it warms up.

Nice set up. Tool box is a good idea. Sure like to have one for this spring but I'm just in the scrounging stage of that project.

here are some more pictures of the trailer.
this is where the bottom of cylinder is attached the cylinder is 4" bore 30" stroke 2" rod 1.25" pins 80+lbs.

rod end attached with 1/4" angle welded to 1/8" I beam crossmember reinforced with 1/4" angle.

underside of bed once the 1/8 sheet is welded in to all the crossmembers nothing should twist or move. used a peice of plywood so i could test while hauling fire wood to see if anything would bend. no problems, so i know when i weld the floor in it will not move with heavy loads of stone.

hinge. the hinge is made of cat D8 cutting edge bolt washers that are stacked and boxed in with two peices of angle. they are welded to the bottom frame. the pin is 1 1/8" and is welded on the ends to the bed with 5/16" flatstock & 1/4" thick square tube on the inside of hinge to give more surface area to weld on, & of course a grease fitting.

its a weasle living in that trash can. had to buy metal ones because the mice & squirrels kept chewing holes in the lids as you can see buy this one. weasles are the best mouse traps around. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

nice job on the trailer.. thats one heavy duty cylinder.. i liked all the pics, especially the critter. you will have to take the weasel for a ride when you get her all painted up.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
