When I looked it up - its called superfine here in the states, I guess. The only sugar I use - making hummingbird food. I'll normally go thru 15 pounds this time of year.

We have a small town here that has an antique tractor show every summer and they churn ice cream with an old hit an miss engine.

We always just make vanilla and then if you want to add some strawberries or other fruit to the bowl then have at it. I prefer just plain vanilla when home made.

Yep. It borders on sinful to taint homemade vanilla ice cream with flavors.

And the mix needs to be from scratch and cooked on the stove.

Even better if hand cranked using block ice crushed in a gunnie sack using a double blade ax.

Yummy....

I never cook ice cream. The fresh peach or fresh berry ice cream loses its flavor if you cook the fruit, and custard style ice cream freezes solid before it reaches the brain freeze cold that makes home made ice cream so great. If you are concerned about the eggs, you can get Egg Beaters at the grocery store that are pasteurized.

it's been many years, but when I was a kid, we had our own milk cow, chickens, etc. so plenty of milk and eggs. And while I no longer have the recipe, I know my mother always cooked the milk and eggs for the hand cranked ice cream. But I don't think there was ever any fruit cooked in it.

If I wanted fruit would add it after cooking, as it went into the mixer, or as I was dishing up a bowl. I always preferred the plain old vanilla though, if anything I would pour a little homemade maple syrup over the top. The last time that I had it was many years ago at a family gathering. At the time my father was raising geese and ducks, so those eggs got used. :licking:
