Home Made Ice Cream

I never cook ice cream. The fresh peach or fresh berry ice cream loses its flavor if you cook the fruit, and custard style ice cream freezes solid before it reaches the brain freeze cold that makes home made ice cream so great. If you are concerned about the eggs, you can get Egg Beaters at the grocery store that are pasteurized.

I guess my Mom and Grandmother didn't know what they were doing..... Wonder why it turned out so good????

it's been many years, but when I was a kid, we had our own milk cow, chickens, etc. so plenty of milk and eggs. And while I no longer have the recipe, I know my mother always cooked the milk and eggs for the hand cranked ice cream. But I don't think there was ever any fruit cooked in it.

Exactly. I'm guessing there are members here that have never experienced this delicacy. Yummy!!!!

I can still remember the old hand crank ice cream maker. I know we used a lot of chipped ice but I don't remember adding rock salt to the ice like we now do.

The churning always started with the little kids - easy churning - and ended with the big strapping fellows because the ice cream was pretty stiff and almost finished.

Not home made but Costco has a premium brand that is second to none.

Yes, we always used some salt on the ice.

Salt and water on the ice, makes it get colder faster.

Salt sucks heat away, makes ice melt faster sucking heat out. Can make it not so sweet, and all natural stuff. I'm proof that home made ice cream will neither kill a man nor make him sick if he eats a few quarts. Best I've had is with peaches ground up with the ingredients. All blended together. Changes the flavor to where I had to have two horses roped to me to pull me away. They had a hard time.
