Here comes the RAIN !!!

Yep, Eddie, they changed our forecast to 100% with flash flood watch until 7 p.m. tomorrow. Right now, we're just getting a sprinkle, but lots of lightning and it seems the really heavy stuff has stalled for the moment just north and west of us. It would appear on the radar that jinman should have gotten some heavy rain by now.

Well, the first round has past me in SW Wise county. Pea size hail and little over 1/2" rain. Most of this was run off. This storm looked worse than it was with the lightening, pretty intense. Only lasted about 30 minutes

NWS winter forecast for Texas calls for wetter and colder than normal. I also heard that we could have a repeat of the '78-'79 winter where we got a lot of snow. I can remember we had about 5" of snow during that winter.

It is raining here now and has been since about 2 AM. Radar show rain activity all the way down to the Gulf. Forecast predicts rain all day, continuing until early AM tomorrow.
The rain we have received the past six weeks is nearly equal to what has fallen the rest of the year.
Geez, we spent the first eight months of the year complaining about the lack of rain and now,,,,,,guess we better not say anyting about too much rain or He might turn off the tap.

We had gusty wind here last night, but nothing more. I can't say we didn't get a drop of rain, but I never heard or saw one. The fact that Western in SW Wise County got hail and rain is just a testament to how this storm blew past us and didn't form up until is was about 20 miles south of here. We were watching pouring rain on the 10 PM news and yet it was dry here. That's really okay with me. Our ground is saturated and our ponds are full to the top.

On checking the NWS this morning, it looks like everyone from Eddie in Tyler to Doug in Lampasas (and southeast to the gulf) will get their weather forecasting rocks wet today.:)

I went to bed at 10 p.m. last night, and then we had great thunderstorm; loud and bright. It wasn't raining here at 7 a.m. today, and I poured about .73" of rain out of the gauge. But we're getting a pretty good shower right now.

It arrived here with a BANG at 4:30 this morning!!! The thunder did all it could to make sure we were all wide awake when it got here. LOL

It's been raining steady ever since, but nothing too extreme. In the last 6 houres, I'm just over an inch of rain. The radar makes it look like it's going to keep raining all day today. It's all coming up from the Gulf and heading East.

I'm going to work on paperwork and a design for a client. She's already hired me, and I haven't even told her how much or what it will look like. Some of my clients are just amazing.

Seems the forecast for the rest of the week starting Wednesday is rain, through Friday night.

I don't know where the water is going to go at this point? hopefully this will help the aquifers.

I leave for Colorado tomorrow so now I must decide of I want to drive in rain/snow or rain snow..

Where I live, a few miles North of Leander, we have received almost 4-inches thus far last night and this morning and proud to get it.. according to the rain gauge in Lampasas, we had gotten 3.7-inches last week... my new stock tank managed to catch a couple of feet of water, which I am proud to get.... sure would like to see that thing fill up completely this winter.... Would love to order fish to stock it with... lol

Dennis,

Drive safely and good luck on your hunt. With the cool weather and early winter, the animals should be a bit more active then normal. Hope you get plenty of oportunties!!!!

Post pics of what you get, or at least an update on how it went.

Thanks Eddie,
Thanks. Spoke with a friend I met while living there, he said some bulls are still bugling and holding around 9000-10000' which is generally unheard of this late. The forecast calls for drastically lower temps and snow, so I am counting on them moving to the lower foothills by Saturday. I don't mind the snow, just don't like the rain..(mud).

another 3+ inches of rain today....
This summer, it couldn't get drier, only stay dry longer.
Now, it can't get wetter, only stay wet longer.

Yesterday, the rain guage held 1.7 inches. The total for October is 10+ inches with a 60% chance of rain on Thursday.

I only got about 1.25" from this last round, but that make my total for October 12.93" and our NWS forecast is 70% tomorrow night and 80% Thursday. I've got all the stuff to put a fresh finish on my patio if it ever gets dry enough.

I just noticed an article in today's Denton Record-Chronicle newspaper that Denton has gotten 12.06" of rain this October. That's a lot more than the typical 3.96" for October, but nowhere near the devastating October flooding of 1981 when Denton recorded 23.46" and Gainesville about 25".

Wasn't that when they had a drowned elephant and some other animals at the Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville?

EDIT: It appears I was wrong. Gerry the elephant was a survivor of the flood, but also has some sad history associated with becoming a problem animal.

From Wikipedia:

Another flood brought Gainesville into the national spotlight when, on September 21, 1981, the Trinity River flooded much of the town, including the local zoo. The Frank Buck Zoo, named for famed zookeeper Frank Buck, lost more than forty animals that day. The one that garnered the attention and love of the world was Gerry the elephant. Named Gerry II after the zoo's original elephant, Gerry managed to survive the flood, after being swept down river, by hanging on to tree limbs with her trunk for 36 hours. At the worst of the flood, the only part of her body that was not submerged was her trunk. Since the flood Gerry (now known as Sissy) has remained in the spotlight off and on. There was an attempt to breed her at the Fort Worth Zoo in the 1980s, but that didn't work out. In 1997, she crushed a zookeeper against the doorway of her barn enclosure at the Frank Buck zoo. While details around the death are still shrouded in mystery, zoo officials labeled her as a problem animal and shipped her off in the middle of the night to avoid protests from the community that had come to love her over the years. After leaving Gainesville, she was sent to Houston Zoo and then El Paso. She made headlines again when video footage of her arrival at El Paso was leaked to media outlets. The footage showed zookeepers beating Gerry with clubs for over an hour. The zookeepers never really explained why they did what they did to her. Thankfully, Gerry/Sissy was sent to an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, where she resides at the present time. Gerry turned 40 on Dec. 1, 2008.

Yeah, I guess the elephant survived, but that was the flood alright. I've read that the Moss Lake dam burst, which was something that added to the flood.

Margaret & I went to see that Frank Buck Zoo on June 7 of this year. That's the only time we've been there.

Had a storm come through last night that kept us up for awhile with the thunder. It's been raining off and on all day today, with just over an inch of rain in my rain gauge. It's now building to a severe thunder storm with hail and tornado warnings.

About 15 minutes ago, a tornado touched down in Longview, which is about half an hour from me. There are tractor trailers on their sides and damaged buildings. It's all happening as I type this. I'm watching it on the radar and listening to the news reports on the radio.

As it moves off, there are two other super cells with rotation that might create tornadoes so far. As the storms build, the predictions are for more warnings.

On a side note, this storm is being created all around me, and it's heading North East. Over the next couple of days, it will cross the country and allot of you will have to deal with it too. Here, it's heavy rain, thunder, lightning, hail and tornadoes. Soon, it will be dumping snow as it works its way North.

Keep your head down, Eddie. Where we are it is calm, warm, and a gorgeous day with only a few wispy clouds. Tonight, it's supposed to cool down and it will be in the 40s during the daytime for the next few days. We loaded our woodbox in preparation for a roaring fire in the fireplace.:)

It's always something to be thankful for when storms don't come to your area, but it's a darn shame that folks anywhere have to deal with the terror and damage of a tornado and severe wind storms on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.:(
