Here comes the RAIN !!!

/ Here comes the RAIN !!! #441
But the sun today melted most of it off and the roads were clear, except a little damp in places, when we came back home.

Bird, I'm so glad you and Margaret came through your "adventure" unscathed. I saw so many people who were not as lucky that I just didn't even consider going out and taking a chance.

All the places I plowed on the road and our driveway melted down to the gravel before the end of the day yesterday, but other places are still covered in 4"+ of snow. I'm looking at my thermometer right now and it is 13.6 degrees F. That's the coldest day we have had this season. That means any water anywhere on the road surface is a glaze of ice. We will wait until it warms up to the mid-30s before we even consider driving today.

Still a little worse out your way than here, Jim. 18-19 for a low yesterday and again this morning, but supposed to go to the mid-40s today, so the roads around here are in pretty good shape; still need to watch for patches of ice. I would rather have not gotten out yesterday morning myself, but with 2 turkeys, 2 dozen deviled eggs, 4 pies, 6 little applesauce cakes, and a few Christmas gifts, I almost had to. There were 24 of us for dinner and fortunately, everyone made it safely, even from Waco, Mexia, Garland, & Irving.

We're supposed to meet more family members for lunch in Plano at 11 a.m., then 14 of us are going to the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament this evening. That place has been there in Dallas a long time, but we've never seen it, and that's one of our Christmas gifts from one daughter.

You were probably smart, Jim. We just got back from our youngest daughter's place in north Fort Worth. We left here about 9 a.m. and it's 31.9 miles from our house to hers; at least 31 of that is I-35E and I-35W. Wow, the streets in our neighborhood were icy and slick! Then in that 31 miles, we counted 39 vehicles off in the ditches. I think that included four 18-wheelers and one SUV that wasn't in the ditch, it had knocked a hole in the center guardrail and was still there.

The bad part was that Margaret was keeping count and for awhile she thought we were going to be number 25. First time in my life, I ever lost control on ice. I've done 360s on ice for fun stunt driving, but this one wasn't planned. I was doing 30-35 mph on a straight road (I-35W) southbound, relatively flat, neither accelerating nor decelerating when the back end of the Crown Vic started to the left. I steered into it properly, but obviously overdid it a bit and it whipped around so fast we were going backwards. The good news is that there was no other traffic anywhere close and I got it stopped and turned back around without leaving the pavement.

But the sun today melted most of it off and the roads were clear, except a little damp in places, when we came back home.

Bird, glad you made it through....After your "spin out" you should have looked at your wife and said " that was fun, didn't think I could still do it"...:D
