Just watched the weather on the news and it looks like North East of the Dallas area has had several tornadoes today. We pay close attention to the tornado watch and are always afraid of one hitting here. Don't really know what to do besides hunkering down in the bathtub with blankets all over us and hoping for the best.

Tomorrow is still building for a big day. I gotta fix a few things at a church in the morning, but hope to be home before it hits.

Calling for some possible strong stuff here as well later today. Friends in Baton Rouge had a rough evening couple nights ago. We had some thunder last night but mostly just rain. About .75 last night. Had 2 inches last week and another 1.5 inches earlier this week.

We've had our fill of rain for a little while.

Hope everyone has a safe day and evening.

Well, I didn't get any rain that did anything but put a bunch of dirty dots on my car. It looked so bad that I drove through the carwash at Sam's yesterday just to be able to see out of the windows.

Now, this weekend, we are planning on a light freeze Saturday and Sunday night. We always seem to get a freeze during the last two weeks in March.:(

The storm was east and north of us. Saint Jo and Muenster had hail and high winds. Some of the hail was softball size, but most of it was egg size. I've got to call my brother in Whitesboro this morning to make sure he is okay.

And last night, Kathy and I were fighting a grass and brush fire on the property we just sold. We are not sure how it started, but she smelled smoke and went to investigate. Nobody was home and the fire was going like gangbusters in dry grass and into the edge of the woods. Kathy didn't have her glasses and her eyes were watering so bad from the smoke that she called me on a speed dial button. She asked me to call 911 and get the fire department on the way while she tried to get hoses put together.

I was showing a prospective buyer the 11 acre tract we have for sale, but I called 911 and told them where the fire was. I then excused myself from the clients and went to help Kathy. She was exhausted from dragging three 100' hoses and hooking them up. She knew she had left some hoses in the wellhouse, but had to drag all three of them about 400 feet and then hook them together and drag them to the fire. I got there as she was heading to the fire's leading edge with the hose. I told her to let me drag the hose and she should rest. The fire was easy to knock down with a spray of water. I walked upwind behind the fire and was able to stay away from most of the smoke. I made sure I wet my walking path in front of me as I dragged the hose. By the time the first firetruck arrived, I had over half the fire out and was running out of hose. I was sure glad to see them because the fire was getting into the edge of the trees and would soon have had the woods ablaze. Within 10 minutes, the fire was out and we were treating reflashes and smoldering limbs on the ground. A huge pile of trash that had been piled up nearby was no longer there. It was only ash.

The new owner of the property said he didn't know how the fire got started. The neighbor across the street said he had smelled smoke the day before, and thought there was someone there. Since the trash pile was completely burned, I'm thinking someone set the fire in the trash pile and it took 24 hours to burn and get out of hand. I have no idea, but I do know that pile of wood, telephone pole scraps, and treated timbers would not burn up within the hour to 1/2 hour before we got there. It had to burn a long time to be completely burned as it was. Those telephone pole sections were 12" in diameter and about 4' long. They just won't burn up that fast. The owner thinks somebody set the fire on purpose when he was not there. I just don't know how it got started, but I'm sure glad Kathy and I got to it and kept it mostlly under control until the volunteer fire dept. arrived.:)

Jinman,

I've been out of state for the last three weeks and I was pleasantly surprised at all the green I saw in our pastures when I returned, and all of it from mainly only one rain occurance in those three weeks. Hopefully, we'll be getting more rain soon, after this major cold front slides through this weekend. My big tank is down about half way and needs water badly.

Sorry about that brush fire you and Kathy had to fight. I worry constantly around here that someone new from the city who doesn't understand the severity of our dry situation will carelessly burn trash and start a bad brush fire somewhere around here. Those types of fires can travel quickly and far, as you well know. Glad you and Kathy caught it.

Went and checked the rain gauge this morning. Four inches in the last week and half. Had two inches before that. Calling for more rain Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. If you're not on a hill your soaking wet around here. Every pond around is overflowing and looks like there are ponds in fields where there isn't a pond. Love the warmer weather but good gosh we need a little break.

To all you TEXAS TBN'ers: What's all this talk about ponds? All the Texans I know don't have ponds they have TANKS!! Hahaha!:D Anyway, glad to hear you were blessed with some of that much needed wet stuff. Ours came last Saturday in the form of snow. 3 inches of it here! It was gone by Sunday morn. The panhandle folks got over 2 FEET in places! Those poor folks barely get by on a few inches of rain per year and then all of a sudden get 24 inches of snow!

I've been a Texan for more than 52 years, but for 16 years before that I was an Okie and, yes, in Oklahoma we only had tanks. I thought "pond" was a word only used in books.:D

I always heard it referred to as a "stock tank," meaning it was for watering cattle. In my case, it's only a recreational fishing pond. If I ever get any cattle or other stock, I'll have to start calling it a tank.:D

BTW: You know how cows will wade out into the water to drink or cool themselves? Sometimes they get stuck and you have to pull them out of the tank. My dam is so steep that they better be able to swim. Most of the banks are about a 100% grade, 8' out = 8' deep.

Wow! jinman! That's neither a pond or a tank! That's a crater that holds water!:D I guess the picture you have there is when you were cutting in that 100% grade? With all the sand rock we have around here we're doing good to get a pond dug.

Sometimes they get stuck and you have to pull them out of the tank.

The 27 acres next to my place in Navarro County had a new tank dug with very steep sides and sure enough a cow got bogged down and stuck in the clay bottom when there wasn't even any standing water in that tank yet. She had a calf that was only a few days old and fortunately, it didn't get stuck, but the neighbor came to borrow some chains from me because he didn't have enough rope and chain to reach from the cow up to level ground to hook up to his 85 hp Oliver. Fortunately, it was a cow with horns, but even so, she was in so deep that I was afraid pulling her out was going to kill her. But he drug her out and onto flat ground and she just laid there on her side for 10-15 minutes while we stood around wondering whether she was going to die or not. But then she finally struggled to her feet and recovered.

Just over half an inch from last nights storm. Or I should say, the storm that came through early this morning at 3am and woke us all up. Lot of thunder, heavy downpour and then it was gone. Just more mud for me as both of my ponds are full and overflowing.

I've never heard anybody call a pond here in my area anything but a pond or a lake. The few times I asked what the difference is, I've always been told one of two things A pond is less then an acre, a lake is over an acre. The other thing that I've been told is it's whatever you want to call it.

Mine are ponds, but my big pond is called Lake Marabou. It's four acres of surface water when full. My small pond is called Alissa Pond and it's 3/4 of an acre when full.

That big storm last night just gave me about .02" of rain.:D However, our youngest daughter lives just west of I-35W in Ft. Worth, a couple of miles south of the Texas Motor Speedway and she said the smallest hailstones were about the size of golfballs and the others were bigger. She said the yard was white before it was over. They have 3 vehicles with dents and have an adjuster coming Friday to inspect the roof of the house. And Margaret was watching the TV news this morning and they said there were already a lot of RVers at the Texas Motor Speedway for the race coming up this weekend and that they took quite a beating.

Need to give my mom a call, she lives about 5-10 minutes south of the speedway right off the freeway.

She likely had a pretty good hailstorm about 10:30 p.m. last night. And I said my daughter was a couple of miles south of the Speedway when it's actually more like 5 miles or maybe a bit more. She's about 3 miles south of the Alliance Airport. Your mother and my daughter may be neighbors.

My wife's mom and dad live in Haslet, off Hwy 287 and Bonds Ranch Road. They had mostly quarter-size hail and some golfball size. I think what I saw from Keller was the worst in the area, baseball size.

Anyway, my wife is driving her mom and dad to Waynesville, Ohio. Her 94 year old grandmother (father's side) just passed away. They left yesterday at noon and should be in Waynesville sometime early tomorrow if everything goes well. I guess her mom and dad will have to have a roof inspection when they return home on Sunday or Monday.

Sorry to hear about Kathy's grandmother, Jim. Hope she and her parents have an uneventful trip to Ohio.

It has been raining here for about 12 hours, and is expected to last for another 48 hours. I am glad to see the rain, mainly to wash most of the pollen away, and decrease the chance of forest fires. Looking at the rain using my infrared camera, it looks like white hot liquid metal falling off the roof.

Bet that would make for an interesting video if you could post it.

Had another storm roll through this morning. The thunder woke us up about 5 am and it kept rumbling until 8 am or so. By 9, it was sunny outside again, but very, very windy. My digital rain gauge shows .35 of an inch. Everything is saturated, the ponds are full and overflowing.

We had a storm roll through here yesterday. At 3:37 AM I heard the lead blast of strong winds hit the north side of the house. Then rain, wind, lightning and thunder for two hours. The rain gauge read .6 inch, but we had 30 to 45 mph winds all day until 5 PM. When I drove down my road to feed my stock last night the dust kicked up behind me.
So much for the rain.
